Re: Springers & Smelt
I fished Mult. Channel on Friday. Fishing was very slow. I saw three 'Nooks landed and, since they had all their fins, they were released. Each guy who netted a fish reported the 'Nook barfed up a bucket of smelt. ...and you wonder why the bite is slow? Smelt were jumping throughout the channel.

Re: Springers & Smelt
I got a nice 18 lb. hen this morning on the Multnomah Channel and it had 11 smelt in it's belly! Didn't seem to keep it from smackin my kwikfish though. I've got a good digital picture of it, I just need to learn how to put it on here.

Re: Springers & Smelt
Thanks, Rick. My picturetrail username is killertraylor. I viewed your album and I think I need to create an album myself. I just uploaded the pics - I'll try it again once I get an album set up.

Re: Springers & Smelt
Thanks Guys
Pete, You made my point whthout knowing it.Springer Fishing is always slow in years we have big Smelt runs.It will improve drastically when the little ******* die.
The problem we now face is this.
Will the smelt die off before the water temp reaches the level at which the fish stop biting until they keg up at OC.Hope for Gray days.

Re: Springers & Smelt
The fish I caught in the channel last weekend had four smelt in it's gut. Makes me wonder if good fishing is going to have to wait until the smelt run is over. Fished Friday in the channel. I saw two on, one landed, and heard of a coulple others caught.

Re: Springers & Smelt
O.K. this is driving me nuts - I guess the only way to see it is to clink on this link:
http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...004&uid=123028
This hen took a k-14 kwikfish - silver with pink dots - I call them clowns. I use a spreader bar on the tail of the kwikfish with 2 size 4 gamakatsu trebles and then I put a small swivel on the belly hook of the kwikfish to get it back a little. This fish was hooked on the belly hook only - which is rare. I find that I hook a lot more fish with the two trailer hooks, but you have to be real gentle playing them because they can straighten out easy. I definitely hook more fish this way than with the standard hooks that come on the kwikfish. I used a little sardine butter too. I was anchor fishing in the Mult. channel about 1 mile up from where it dumps into the Columbia. Current started running at about 11:30 today and I was home in Portland by 1:00! Lucky day!
