Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Dick's Sporting Goods names first Oregon location
Posted by The Oregonian business desk February 7, 2007 17:09
Print | Email
Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, said today that it will open its first West Coast store in the space formerly occupied by Mervyn's at Washington Square mall.
The Pittsburgh-based chain will make its left coast debut as a new anchor tenant at the Tigard mall in the spring of 2008. Store officials are now in the early planning stages of developing a 90,000-square-foot space between JC Penney and Macy's.
The space opened up last year, when Mervyn's announced plans to close all 19 of its Oregon and Washington stores.

Sweet! It's about time they get some kind of sporting goods store in that mall.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Interesting, but I've grown fond of Joes, The Warehouse and F.Marine.
Although another competitor doesn't hurt my feelings.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Man, you guys sure are downers. This sounds great - sounds like a good place for me to hang out while the wife spends all the money. It looks more like an REI than a Joes however. I can't imagine that the mall owners want Dick's customers walking around the mall with their new gun purchase.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
I didn't mean to sound like a pessimist.
But you do have a good point about giving us "real men" something do while we wait.
The Eddie Bauer store never did do much for me.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
I have to agree w/ ya there Dennis. But it beats hanging out at Sears browsing for tools.
Or enduring your wife showing ya what diamonds she doesn't have at Herzogs!
The only Silver & Gold I'm interested in, is made by Browning!

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
H&F if my wife showed me all the diamonds she didn't have, it would be every singe one of them. When I traded you for that Lilja, it cost me a lot more than you'll ever know. Now if I can just keep her believing the Avet reels I'm buying are only a 'little' more than my abu 6501 I'll be set.
Hit the search feature on bobs, stick the word Tuna in - three items two DVD's and a dehydrated hiking meal - I' don't think I'll be spending much time or money there.

This sporting goods store works too........

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Bill, I went to their site and looked at what salt water reels they carry - and then tried to find lures and couldn't very easily so I tried Tuna and got zippo - It sure looks a lot like a GI Joes from the web site they cover a lot of ground, but not terribly deep in any of them.
They can't be all bad they do carry racquetball stuff and have my sponsor as an anchor on that page - gotta love that list price on the o3 Black - $290 who are they kidding.
I'm sure I'll wonder in once to look around

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
here it the link to their website. go take a look:
they have a navigation bar accross the top of their webpage that doesn't list either "fishing" or 'hunting" they are both sub categories of "outdoors". Not exactly a sportsmans warehouse or fishermans marine.
more like Joes...

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Nope - just another Sports Authority, Copelands, Big 5 riding the Nike and Adida's band wagon. Sorry, but I don't get all the hype. There are literally hundreds of local stores to buy the stuff that Dick's carries...mostly shoes, sweats, weights, etc. It looks like they sell some gear online - shakespeare, martin, pfleuger, etc. More like a Big 5 as far as I can tell.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Agreed.....7 differant turkey decoys and not one single duck or goose decoy? No guns?
Not worth visiting then.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
I predict that Dicks will have the same fate as copelands at clackamas town center. Prices will be to high and it will close in 2-3 years. Everyone around here shops at joes, SW, fishermans, and bi-mart. i don't see that changing anytime soon. not for me anyway

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
Seriously, They would have to be something very special for many to change their sporting goods buying habits.
With the introduction of Cabelas in WA they might find it a rough place to do business....

My goodness man, don't you know that we already have far too many naked women here in Oregon? Oregon has the highest per capita rate of strip clubs in the entire nation already. We don't need any more of them. Heck there are 58 alone right inside Portland city limits!!
I even attended a function in Portland a few months ago, and what did the organizers do?? I could not believe it! They ordered a group of strippers from one of the local Portland clubs to provide entertainment!! And the guys went virtually bananas over them.
Just what is this fascination that we men have with young women taking off their clothes??? Should not men our age be more refined and gentleman like?
Now I still went in and attended the event, despite my misgivings when I saw the strippers arrive in their limo. I had to endure seeing a Canadian Mountie, a Jungle Woman, a Buccaneer Wench, and a Police Officer, all do their thing.
We men should focus on much more wholesome activities, such as killing wild animals.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
I just keep praying for the day that they build a Sportsmans over here on the west side! It is to the point that I walk around in Joes and I really have a hard time finding any thing to buy. When I do need specific fishing gear they generally do not have it in stock.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
I wonder is Dicks going to sell quality west coast hunting gear or cheap white tail hunting gear like all the other sporting good chains. I miss Larrys on the westside and also bemoan that we don't have a sportsman store over here....I like the internet but there is nothing like getting lost for a hour in Sportsmans Wharehouse.
Maybe they need cabelas over here on the Westside instead of Lacey WA

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
It's probably good that we don't have Sportsman's or Cabela's over here on the westside......
Otherwise I really would be broke all the time.
I was talking w/ one of our contractors that came from California and he was familar w/ Dicks and thought I'd really like the place. Said Joes is a joke by comparison....hum, I like Joes. I suspect I REALLY like Dick's.
Will reserve judgment until it opens. Sorry GIJoes, I'm loyal..... IF YOU HAVE WHAT I WANT, when I want it.

I hate going even near Washington Sqaure. Too much traffic and hassle. They would have to have something very compeling before I would shop there.

Re: Dicks coming to Wash Sq.
How did discussing Dick's turn into a strip club rant? Let's stay on subject, focus people, focus.
I can't even go to Dick's until they become an ifish sponsor.
