Default VHF Radios Sportsmen Show DEAL

Any of you out there looking to purchase a new VHF radio for your boat? I stopped by the Boaters World Booth yesterday and they have the same deal as they did last year on the Icom 422 - $150 - that is $49 off the regular price for that radio. Twice I walked away wondering why I didn't buy one to replace my 402. Oh ya, cause I need to buy a bunch of raffle tickets at the convention so Hoggemin doesn't have a chance

Anyhow that is an excellent price on a great radio.

Also the Icom M-88 hand held was also discounted considerably

You bet Kurt - one thing to watch for on Handhelds is the antenna make sure it is removable. So you can remove it and buy a real one. In the Ham world we call stock rubber duck antennas "dummy loads" or short for a 50ohm load that doesn't radiate RF very well. Replace it with an Antenna from Smiley Antennas - Marine VHF 5/8 Wave Model 20 center tuned for 156Mhz - make sure you order with the correct adapter.

On my vx5r with the stock antenna I couldn't bring up the Astoria Repeater with 5 watts - with 1/2 watt and with the Model 20 for the Ham Bands the repeater was full copy - of what we'd call 5&9 - that is a huge difference when the chips are one the table.

Uhhhhhhhh.......o.k. I have no idea what language he was just talking but I guess if I get a radio I'll just take it to Stickfish and ask him to 'fix it'.

StickFish, I have an ICom 88, can you PM me the number to call to order that antenna, and I'll just read the message into the phone.
