My boy is going fishing :-)
I went to the library last night getting some books for my boy Jack (3 ½ yrs). When we get to the checkout counter Jack says "hey" to the librarian. She is busy and doesnt pay any attention to the little guy in front of her counter. So Jack says "hey" again, and again she pays no attentions to him. This time Jack is determined to get her attention so he says "HEY" at a quite elevated volume for a library. And again she doesnt even look his way. Jack pretty much at the top of his lungs say "HEY YOU". The librarian doesnt pay any attention even though several heads were turned our way now. I politely explain to Jack that the way to get some ones attention is to say "excuse me" not "hey". So again he bellows out "EXCUSE ME" and this librarian doesnt even look his way. I guess she thought she was to busy scanning these books to pay any attention to him. Jack is a determined boy to get her attention and he goes into a "EXCUSE ME, EXCUSE ME, EXCUSE ME!!!!" almost turning his little head red. I am trying to get him to be quite, and asking what it is he wants. I was a bit confused at what his problem was. About that time this librarian looks his way and says "what" in a discusted voice. And Jack says "tomorrow my daddy is taking me fishing" and he turns and walks away, content that he got his message to her. My wife said he did the same thing at the doctors office, and the grocery store yesterday. I guess I had better not break our fishing date after work. He is looking forward to it, but not nearly as much as I am, after feeling like the proudest papa last night. When you tell your kids you are taking them fishing Friday after work, take them fishing. Nothing could be more important tonight for me. We got a couple dozen worms to drown later today.

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
BOE,
That was a great story, hope you and your son have a wonderful time. I took my daughter trout fishing last summer at a local lake, showed her what to do and she caught the one and only trout for the day all by her self, she was five.......I have'nt lived it down since.....but I love it. Now she's going to go springer fishing with me on the Sandy this year but she says I have to find her an average sixed one because she does'nt think she can reel in a big one.
Take a kid fishin and make memories that will last a life time........they don't even have to be your own kids, just take tehm and teach them there's more to life than intendo.

That's awesome. If you broke the promise they may say it's no big deal, but in reality, they would be crushed. BOE, how many little ones do you have?

that's awsome. Let us know how he does. I have not caught a fish yet that gave me the same feeling as watching my three yr. old slay a blue gill.

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
BOE,
Keep up the good work! I've got a 10 year old that claims his own seat in my boat. Just be prepared for the little guy to hook and catch the biggest fish!! I have to agree with hooker, watching my son fight a 33 pounder by himself up in the Columbia gorge gave me more pleasure than catching any 10 fish myself! It's a good investment too, I know I'll have someone to lift me in the boat and take me fishing when I'm old (er) and gray (er)....

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
Man I am jealous, my son is only 2 1/2 so we are not quite to the fishing part yet but I sure can't wait.
That was a cute story BOE! Kids are just the coolest It is interesting to watch your traits (physical and mental) come out as the grow.
I probably would have had so comment to the librarian about the lack of customer service skills though. Children a patrons too and deserve some common courtesy.

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
I believe you Spot, but my wife is one that has set that rule. If I had my way (which I usually do unless the kids are involved) he would have been out with me from day one!
Oh well, the day will come when she will be beggin me to take him so she can get some peace, especially with another on the way!

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
tshikam - got 2 kids, the other is a 15 month old girl that momma wants to make kinda frilly, but that plan aint going well She might be in pink and bows, but she is in the dirt when momma aint looking.
I just had to upsize Jacks lifejacket for the 3rd time. When you think of how often they outgrow shoes, I doubt many people have to keep there kids in lifejackets also.
Last week smelting, When I was dipping Jack was throwing a sinker on his micky mouse pole into the Cowlitz. It didnt have a hook on it, just a sinker, but he didnt care.
When we go crabbing, dont even think about touching the crab float. He has self appointed himself as the official person on the boat to throw the float back in the water. And there aint much cuter than when pulling a crab ring, turning around and seeing him biting his lip and pulling the slack rope already in the boat with determination in his eye. Master-baiter put momma and the kid (almost plural) in the boat and just go.
jack will be a good outdoor partner for the rest of my life.

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
Be careful about taking kids fishing too young. I burned out my then-4 1/2 year old son a couple of years ago. I thought he enjoyed our Sunday afternoon one hour jaunts to the local pay pond. What he enjoyed was one-on-one time with Dad. Not being big enough to reel in the big barramundi (10lb average) by himself, he was frustrated, then bored. I was very surprised when, after a couple months of weekly trips, he said he didn't want to go. I dropped it and it's stayed dead for over two years until last weekend. Max (now almost seven) found "his" old rod in the storage closet and asked to go fishing. We took 4 year Bart and headed to the pond. Bart had a great time splashing in puddles and converting baitfish into goo by stomping on them. Max caught several fish he was able to reel in by himself. He was so happy he wanted to go out the next day, so we did. This time he caught a 14lb barramundi -- by far the biggest fish anyone hooked, much less landed. You talk about a proud dad! So now I've got my fingers crossed that my sons, brought along slowly, are going to share my passion for fishing.
I'm also reminded by TH's story that his boy takes his GameBoy in the boat to give him something to do if he gets bored. That makes sense, too.
BOE, hope your fishing trip was a big winner and that bobber went under often!

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
I took a 13 year old, Kevin, fishing for Chums last fall and up until the float trip he had only caught put-and-take trout. We hit probably 20 fish that day and we (his father and I) let him play all the fish except during a few doubles we had and even had a triple in which I got to fight a mean old bow wow myself. He's hooked for life now, and refers to me as "the best fisherman in the world" Thanks, Kevin, but we all know that RT is the greatest fisherman in the world. I agree that it is important to introduce kids, especially the younger ones, to fishing when the action is hot so that they do not get discouraged. You don't have to go after salmon, just as long as you can have consistent and frequent hookups.
Recently, young Kevin had some disciplinary problems at school. Apparently, he told his teacher to $#%* off. He got suspended and his folks were more than upset when he threatened them with running away from home. I came to the rescue and told Kevin that if he didn't get his arse in gear by behaving in school and respecting his parents, Marlin would spawn in the Skykomish before he got to fish with me again. It worked because that was about a month ago and from what I hear, so far so good. Peace and take a kid fishing Justin

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
BOE,
I know what you mean. My 9 year old, Cameron, goes with me on just about every one of my fishing trips and let me tell ya, the kid can catch the fish. Anyway, he is my best fishing bud and I definitely have a fishin partner for life. My 12 year old boy only likes to fish occasionally, but he is really getting into archery. I'm taking him on his first hunt this year.
Spend time with your Kids. They will always remember it.

Re: My boy is going fishing :-)
MasterB, your kid's old enough to catch a fish. One of my boys caught his first trout a month after his 2nd birthday. Daddy was proud that day. Not only did he reel it in and land it, he set the hook!!! (And I have witnesses to prove it).
They just turned 3 and not a weekend goes by when they don't pestering me to take them fishing.
I'm sure you're a proud Papa BOE
