Default Followup: Diesel v. Gasoline

I would like to thank all the Ifish members that provided me with detailed facts regarding different choices for trucks. All of the information given was extremely helpful in my decision making process.

After 2 months of shopping, I finally committed to a purchase:

1997 Ford F250 SB Crew Cab 4X4 PSD w/ 4.10 gears, new slightly oversized BFGs and camper shell.

Once again, thank you everyone for your help, it was greatly appreciated.

See Ya on the Rivers ASAP!

If PSD stands for "Power Stroke Diesel" you are a wise man.

Must be a manual tranny with the 4:10, my 1999 only came with a 3:72 for the automatic.

BOE: Yes PSD is Power Stroke! Actually it is an AT? The dealer said based on the numbers from the tag it was a 4.10 but I have gotten contradictory info from dealers before depending on which idiot you ask. I will have to jack it up and calc it out just too satify my own curiosity now.

I hear yah WD, PURRRS like a kitten on steroids, my neighbors are gonna HAVE to love it too!!!!!!!

Thanks GUYS...

M.B. If you think it depends on what "idiot" you ask at the dealer, don't bother them with your questions. Most dealership parts department are able to tell which options were original on your truck from the VIN number.

I am not familiar with Ford's program, but a General Motors parts department can print out a build sheet on any 1989 or newer car or truck. It will tell you what engine, transmission, gear ratio etc. as well as what interior or stripe it had on it when it left the factory. I beleive on a Ford there is a sticker with the codes you are looking for. Of course you will have to have some idiot decode it for you.

Sorry if I take exception to your dealer reference, but I did that job for 17 years, and it is not easy with all of the options available these days. There are good parts people and bad. Just don't beleive they are all idiots.

Since you are obviously buying a used truck, does it really matter what rear end gears are in it. If you like the truck, buy it. Unless there is a problem with the rear end that requires parts, why bother some parts person with your question, only to call them an idiot when you don't like their answer?

On a lighter note, enjoy your truck. Ford builds a good product and it should serve you well.

On the drivers side door there is a sticker that has weight rating and tire info on it. There's spot for the axle code. The code to decode it is in your owners manual, if you have one. If you dont give me the code and I'll look it up.

The 94-97's did come with 4.10 in the auto. The 99-up 250-350 superduties come with 3.73 as the lowest gears.

Spooled - Sorry for the hurt feelings ! Lately, I have had alot of bad experience with dealers in the form of condradiction from one dept. and/or dealer to the next. It gets too the point were you gets so many different stories that you do not know which is accurate anymore. In your defense, I think the root of the problem is that the old school good ole boy veterans (such as yourself) have either retired or moved on leaving a bunch of inexperienced people behind that are afraid to tell you that they do not have an answer so they shoot one off the hip. Ford said they could not get that info off the VIN and the gearing was important too me used or not! When you drop $20+ large you need to be damn sure you are getting what you want.

LMAO MH, I am going to have to find taht song so I can balst while the truck is warming up at O-dark thirty! My next door neighbor is deserving of a punishment

WD, I will look for that tag and get back to you, thanks for the offer! So I see from another thread that you are also an Engineer, how many years you been practicing?
