Default Vernonia Mill Pond

I live close to the pond so can fish after work every night if I want to. I know that its only planted trout but fish are fish and rowing my 12 ft skiff is enjoyable. After 5 short trips I have enough to fill my smoker. They bite real well on a chrome triple teaser with the orange head. Also trolling a small black Gnat or mosquito behind a casting bobber works well. When the fish are rising, I can usually get a strike with every cast. I think its a little early for the warm water species as I haven't caught any yet. Bass, crappie, blue gills and even an occasioal catfish can be caught. This is a good pond to take kids fishing on.

I'll second that, Huntr. Vernonia pond was one of the places I cut my fishing teeth on. My grandad used to haul me over there before I could drive and turn me loose for the day. In fact, the biggest crappie I've ever caught in my life came outta there. I got him on wooly bugger w/the fly rod.

It looks like they put some new docks in there this winter. They really have done some nice improvements to the lake. I'd definatly suggest taking the little guys here.

If you want to teach a kid to fly fish this pond has a million, palm size, blue gill in the summer. It's easy to get them into 50 fish an hour, which is just about how many it takes to keep their interest.

I've got some pretty good memories of fishing this pond growing up.

I was fishing for blue gill with just a worm. No weight, just bait. Well my line got all tangled up at the reel, so I had to cut the line. So my mom is holding on to the line and I cut it at the reel (with my bait still in the water) and wouldn't you know it a decent sized bass decided to take the bait. So I'm holding the rod, while my mom is holding the line, while this bass is doing its best to get away. We eventually got the fish in, but we still argue about whos fish it was

Chuck at Bridge Street Bait & Tackle in Vernonia (503-429-0924) will offer advice on chasing bass & panfish in that pond for those interested. He knows it well and even has videos on the subject. He's caught bass to 10 pounds outa that pond.

BTW, he was instrumental in getting those new docks installed and arranging for handicapped access.
