Default Columbia O\'Size Sturgeon

I know with all the concern about the CR Springer allocations, there hasnt been given a lot of talk about the O'Size Sturgeon fishery below Beacon Rock on the Columbia. I believe that on Friday, at the Sportsman Show, 8am., there is going to be a Commission hearing on finallizing the boundaries and dates for that fishery. I would again urge all that have a concern about the limits being proposed that we try to attend.

In the results from the studies that ODFW and WDFW conducted it clearly shows that the oversized fishery has been at a stable level for several years. The numbers also show that the numbers of keeper sized fish are on the increase. As far as the high number of dead fish found last year, the year before was one of the lowest numbers ever recorded. Any person that uses statistical process controls will tell you that for accurate data you throw out the high extreme and the low extreme. They are using a one year most likely flawed data point to make some huge decisions on. It makes much more sense imo to leave the deadline where it is - make the spawning sanctuary that exists now an actual sanctuary - no hooks in the water at all and to get some numbers on how many young sturgeon are produced each year. If those numbers show that the spawning success is being hampered by this fishery then make changes - based on hard data and not mere guesses, concerns and lobbying efforts by those that dont even participate in this fishery.

I had heard some of the same stuff. I too am concerned this is quite an over-reaction. No doubt some control would be wise, but to shut this down for three months is hard to take. I cannot be there, but I have sent email to the appropriate people with my concerns. Thanks for yours.
