Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Just thought I would see what is everybody's favorite kind of jig. Do you like maribou tail, yarn tail, bead body, chenille body, palmered maribou? Thanks for your insight.

My favorite jig is a particular pink Maribou jig that was introduced to me by Mark Anderson. Old Pinky went 3 for 4 today!!!!!!

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
I like a pearl pink head, white/pink maribou and 2 red beads on the hook shank AND anything that Mark ties. The guy is a jig fishing machine. Steve Hanson isn't too bad either plus when you fish with Steverino you get entertained throughout the day. I've seen Jennie in action and she has got it down! If it were'nt for some crummy line she would have landed a nice one last Saturday.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
For me, it all depends on the situation. I really don't have an overall favorite. But, for summerruns, I like a black head with a black and GREEN (not chartruese) marabou. For winterruns, I like pink or pearl head and either a pink, pink/white, or pink/purple jig. Really depends on water clarity. If I really had to settle on one jig, I'd say black head with purple/pink marabou. I've caught alot of steelies and salmon on that combo. I have a couple new jigs I'm developing, if they come about, I'll let you know.....

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
My favorite jig is one that I tie myself. I use either maribou or rabbit strips. If I use the rabbit strip, I palmer it onto the lead that covers the top of the hook shank. I then palmer a soft hackle collar on right below the head of the jig. That hackle collar really pulses as the jig moves through the water. My favorite colors for winter fish are orange and white and light pink or peach and white. The palmered collar is the same color as the main body of the jig. When I am using the rabbit hair. I first wrap on some white maribou that will trail past the end of the rabbit hair. So far these jigs have treated me real well this winter.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
My favorite jig is one that catches fish. I've been experimenting with different hooks and materials and have come up with a couple real winners. Pink and/or white feathers combined with a few beads is one that has put the hurt to many Chinook and Steelhead. I'm currently working on a new set up for fishing plastic baits. Just not enough time for field testing. Using this set up for the first time last week I did get into a half dozen Steelhead in a couple hours, so it looks promising. Just need more time for testing.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Winter Steelhead: Beau-Mac's SMJ 2 (my definite favorite) or SMJ 5 (can be hot)
Summer Steelhead: Beau-Macs SMJ 10 (no idea why a cerise jig works so well in low clear water, but it does)

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
For normal winter time water conditions marabou seems to work great. In smaller streams or really low clear flow like this year, in my experiece, it does not seem to be needed. here, yarn/rabbit fur tails work just fine.
Chomer, I think it is because cerise is basically like red in the color spectrum.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
My favorite 'go to' jig would be the one 'Stew/John/Mark mentioned above; with Mark or John showing me how deep to set the float and where to cast it . Nah, I'm not quite so lame now. I'll tell you though, rabbit fur has moved a longs ways up in my mind. For really low gin clear water a 1/8th oz. black and cerise rabbit fur jig is very good. The fur just looks better in the water to me than palmered marabou; fluffier with better action. Probably not to the fish though . - RT

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Thanks for your input, guys, I appreciate it. I have been making jigs recently and basically gone hog wild with the whole process. I have been powder coating the jig heads and then using an all palmered maribou body or palmered maribou tail with chenille body. So far, the jigs look sweet, but I need to field test to be sure since I have not fished my own jigs in a long time. I am a big fan of the Beau Mac bead body jigs with maribou tail. I have also made a few bead body jigs and they look impressive too! I have been told that palmered maribou has more action and is more appealing than palmered rabbit fur. Whadda yall think? Seems that opinions differ. Do you think that the powder coated jig heads, baked in the oven, are as durable as a couple coats of paint or lure coat?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
I like lure coat the best for the jig heads. My powder coated heads chipped . I can also adjust the look on the paint with the lure coat. Which I can't really do with powder coat. You might want to look at some of the large catus pink chenille for a body material. Also try some saap pink body fur they have some great colors out...shhh

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
The baked on color is the tougest I've ever seen,if you're chippin them heads, bring it up
so many choices the palmered pink and white maribou and the classic all white have produced all year ,I really like the looks of the palmered rabbit too.
the new "Osprey" by www.SilentApproach.com has been a pleasent surprize for a change from the classic maribou.
Of course I've got my secret colors too
it's been such a tough year for flows,I think we've all had to fish like it was summer time.....Os

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
SAUKit2em,
For Winter Steelhead I like to use 1/4oz. or 1/8oz. pink or pink & white marabou jigs, with black painted heads.
For Summer Steelhead I have had good luck with 1/8oz. or 1/16oz. solid black or solid red marabou jigs with or without paint on the heads. I personally have not had much luck with mixed colors for Summers, but I know they work.

We're talking about fishing lures, right?
I'll let you know when I land one a jig, but thanks to a spring loaded bobber, you'll have to wait even longer.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
In many instances, I prefer my weight to be up on the line away from the hook, giving my modified "jig" what I feel is a little more bounce and action in the water than a standard lead jighead. For a head, I use a fairly large bead (black, white, or cerise usually) pegged on the line directly above the hook. If I want a little weight closer to the hook, I put a bb splitshot down there. Do any of you tie jigs like this (without the standard lead head)? What about commercially available 1/32 oz jigheads? Are there any out there?

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Hey Kwiky, Silent Approach has some of those jigs without the weighted heads. They use corkies instead. Pretty neat things. They may have those 1/32 oz heads, but if not, try rainbow jigs.

My favorite jigs are the one's that Saukit2em calls "crap" and gives to me to try out!
For "crap", they sure do look purty and seem to catch fish.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Justin,
If you stick with the 1/8 oz. bead-bodied Beau-Macs, you'll do fine in most water conditions. 3 colors I'd recommend are Cerise, cerise/black, and pink/white. I've used these three in low, clear water and in higher, colored water ("steelhead green") and done very well. This low water we're having hasn't been a hindrance to me this year, in fact it has made tracking them down a little easier.
Of course, there's something a little more satisfying about landing a fish on a jig you tied yourself, but what can I say, I'd rather fish than tie.
I'm sure the color choices are more for the angler than the fish. This year, I've hooked fish in a hole and then changed colors to something different and continued hooking fish. When they're turned on to the jigs, I'm sure there are several patterns that will consistently produce fish.
Fish on..........

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Dan S, whenever you are ready to fish together I'll bring you some of my bead body jigs. Very similar to the Beau Mac jigs. I have some other maribou ones that are pretty trick too. Let's field test 'em I also have a new secret weapon, we'll just call it "the sandshrimp seat belt"
I keep going to the craft and bead stores in search of "the perfect bead". Problem is that when I'm in the bead store, all the good looking girls keep distracting me
Sand Shrimp, you can use any size of bead that you want just as long as it fits over the hook. I usually stick with red but I know that there are jigs in production with green ones too.
How many people out there tip 'em with a little bait?

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
SAUK'em
I like adding a shrimp tail or crawdad tail to my jigs. More than once I've run a bare jig through a drift and not get any takes. Before I walk away I'll put a shrimp tail on the same jig and get a bobber down. Sometimes a little bait does the trick.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Os I was chipping the heads on my own powdered jig heads. I haven't found anything that is completely rock proof. The lure coat is some tough stuff, but takes longer to dry. I don't really think jig head color is usually a big deal but it can be the difference some days.
Sauk I am a jig tipper. I run a bare jig head alot with bait various kinds.
I really like the color of the pearly jigs heads I just got from silent approach. I like the looks of the Palmered bunny also.
They make some nice jigs and that Osprey is a real looker

Thanks for your input, guys. I like the action of the palmered rabbit fur, but I like the action of the palmered maribou too. How 'bout a jig with both? I just made some and they look impressive!!! Good luck and floats down to all.

Re: Jig poll. What's your favorite jig?
Dummy I started with vinyl paint on my jig heads and it would wear off just like the other stuff. Dang that stuff stinks when its drying. It is pretty tough but wasn't the answer to my problem. I think a major problen on the jig head is that it is made of lead and that gets dented and flakes the paint surface. I have seen some jigs tied with a a brass bead with a nail through the bead and then the nail tied on to a jig hook. Bet that would hold the color a little better. Just haven't tried that one yet..yet
I see my post with the trout faking ****** was deleted.. ARG that was sound biological data they deleted so much for natural selection.
