Default Willy unit success

I went for a float on the Greenway to end the season on Sunday. Not much as far as birds so we did some pushes for deer on some islands. Loaded up with slugs and buckshot. Dropped my dad and buddy off at the top then floated down about 400yrds and set up in an opening that gave me view of two well used trails. I was set up in a small strip of timber between a slough and the river. So after about 20min the ducks just start pouring into the slough. Obviously kicked up from the other end by my pushers. So after seeing a flock of widgeon and two flocks of mallards land about 80 yards away I decide to go shoot some ducks. I lean my shotgun up against a tree and fish out 3 3.5" hevishot #6's out of my waders. Just then I see a deer @ 40yrds and headed my way at a trot. I drop the shells and pick my gun up. The deer stops behind some bushes at 15yrds and looks my way. I put the bead on its face (all I can see) and touch off a 3" slug. The kick was harsh and when I recover the deer is gone. Try to pump my piece of crap 870 and it is jammed. Slam the butt on my thigh and clear it. I walked over to where the deer was standing and I see it is a doe that is missing half of its head, GROSS. I reload with the hevishot and go over to the slough, but the birds are gone. We gutted the deer; hog tied the legs, threw it in the river and lashed it to the back of the boat. I wish I had a pic as it was really funny looking just four hooves sticking up above the gunnels.

Wink Re: Willy unit success

A while ago some one made a post wondering where to hunt the Willamette Unit.....Here's what I posted:

"If you have a small boat & a shotgun, I'd say put in at Buena Vista Ferry and drift the river to Independance (near the river bank). I'd stop and hunt every island and slough on the way down. I know of many deer taken by locals and duck hunters.....even passed on a few does in my day there."

Now I'm not saying that I know EVERYTHING....Just everything worth knowing
