Unhappy Cougar kill on the Chukar slope

Well after reading Maverick Maxcat's post on Chukar finale I thought I would respond, but soon found myself hi-jacking his thread. I hunted Juntura Saturday for the last day of my season. Had a great day in a new spot finishing with 7 in the bag and unfortunately lost a couple runners. On to my point though. As I am heading home Sunday morning I passed a friend of mine heading toward Juntura. He recently retired and is a huge dog NUT! He is very active in the field trial world and a life long Chukar hunter. Didn't think much of it when I passed him, heck I didn't even have time to wave. As I am starting my work day monday I get a call from another friend of mine that proceedes to tell me that Roger lost a dog to a cat Sunday morning! The story was like third hand so I didn't know what to think at first. Then it was confirmed by a reliable source. Seems that Roger was hunting his young dog that he regards pretty highly. She was a dog he got from 100year old frozen semen out of a world champion Brittany!!!! Anyway, he has big running dogs and he had lost the dog for a moment or ten. As he gets to the dog with the aid of his tracking collar he see's a cougar attacking his dog!!!! He fires a shot over their heads and as the cat turns to leave he fires another at it. Before he can get to the dog she has expired ! Well, my heart goes out to Roger for his HUGE loss! This all happened just miles from Juntura in an area that gets hunted a fair amount. Pretty bad deal to say the least!

Wow. Sorry to hear about that -- for more reasons than one. I guess we have to worry about more than a pad being torn off or overheating. That had to be tough.

Looks like Chukar hunters are going to have to start carrying a couple of #4 Buckshot shells on them! Wow, what a hearbreaking story!

I wonder if he will get a cougar tag, and head back there? Just losing a loved dog to natural causes can often be a traumatic experience enough. This is truely tragic.

Lance,

His good friend and hunting partner went back the very next day to try to call in the cat. Haven't heard if they got it or not??? Doubtful.

Too bad for the dog...

I've wondered many times as I topped over a rim if there was a cougar on the other side. Luckily for us labrador chukar hunters our dogs are usually within range.

I had another friend this weekend that had a dog out of sight.

It was found pointing in some thick brush up one of the canyons.

As the onwer walked up into the brush he lost sight of the dog, then a bunch of yelping and it came running out at full speed. A few seconds later he saw a cougar exit above him going uphill.

Thankfully the dog and owner are both OK

Sorry to here about your pup
