Default Herring & Lure cobination

I have never tried a herring attached to the underside of a lure. I have heard that it works quite well under some conditions. Would someone please explain how the herring is prepared and attached and how it is fished? Thanks.

Cagey, I think what you are refering to is wrapping herring or sardine filets onto the belly of Kwikfish or Flatfish with thin fishing thread. It is very effective to do this (but these lures will also work with just bait oil scent on them). Cut thin filets off the sides of the baitfish and then cut them into about 1 1/2" to 2" lengths. Cut a slit half way up from one end of these peices. Put this around the belly hookeye with the meat side out, and wrapped several times the length of the filet with the stretchy bait wrapping thread (in white or red). Then re-check after this to make sure the Kwikfish/Flatfish still dives straight in current, rather than more toward one side. If they go left more then rotate the front eyescrew a tiny amount counterclockwise as you look at the front of the lure, with the back end away from you. Opposite for the other way direction. These are great for springers in K-14/15 size in the chrome with blue scale color pattern; and many others too. Use them to troll or anchorup during the outgoing tide in the Columbia or Willamette for springers. - RT

Thankyou RT. That was exactly the instructions i was looking for and i am sure going to try it, While iam posting my reply i would also like to thank all you folks on the discussion board. Even though i have been a devout fisherman for 50 years i still learn stuff from you about new tecniques and they are really helpful, and all of you are so willing to help. Besides that reading some of your posts are better than a good joke. Thanks a bunch. Cagey.

Thanks RKB....

I agree that the episode you're refering to shows my BIG buddy, Jeff Stefanick wrapping up the Sardine Fillet, lays it out pretty well. Not too hard and very effective.

I guess the only thing that really bothers me about this whole fillet-wrap deal is....here, I buy this gorgeous chrome and airbrush flourescent-speckled kwikfish for its beauty....but then I entirely trash it's looks with a clump of insideout sardine fillet and crappy-wrap-it with thread. Looks awfully ugly for something that started out so seductively beautiful.

...and yes, I know it's a hot bait. Big nooks suck it down and hold it down. My buds and I used it frequently and rather successfully in the coasts tidal areas....back when the big tails used to roam.

...but given my druthers, today, I think I'd just stick with a pretty flatfish...and maybe add a dab of baitbutter.

My 2 cents...that's $1.29 Canadian!

Something else that works real good is to put a piece of velcro tape(fuzzie)side on the bottom of the plug it holds scent very well.peel off when your done. Also has less effect on the tuning of your plugs.RKB
