Default Battery cable length

I am working on some weight / balance issues with my boat and was wondering if I can move my batteries to the front of the boat. Unfortunately, this would mean really long battery cables... Would this cause too much resistance? Would the cables heat up, or would I have less cranking power? Thanks.

If you need to run longer cables, you'll need to go with bigger diameter as well.

I moved the batteries on my 15' Arima up into the cuddy cabin several years ago with great success. It has been years, but I remember looking at a chart and choosing the cable size based on the length. Choose the right cable and you will be fine. Of course you didn't tell us what size boat or motor you are trying to do this on..... 26'er with twin 250s?....might not be a good idea.

My 70hp Yamaha doesn't need many amps to turn over.

hello, the question is what engine are you trying to start? if it were a v-8 a 2/0 cable is necessary, but the caveat is you need to install the battery switch as close to the battery as possible but you can add circuit buss's near the engine to terminate your battery cables.

Thanks. I think I scrapped the idea. I was looking at the killer deal Streetwalker had on two small gel batteries on the classifieds and thinking of placing them in my forward fishbox (I don't use it as a fishbox because it drains to the bilge and I hate having nasty stuff clog my bilge pumps). Anyway, thanks for the replies, but I think I'm going a different route.
