Default 1/25 Report(Pictures added)

Hey,

Got to spend part of the day yesterday chasing the elusive coastal steelie. Unfortunately, the water that I prefer to fish was gin clear and had many a gear fisherman wading the river casting at dark fish as they run the "snagger" gauntlet time and time again. So I decided to venture farther downriver and explore some new water that I had been meaning to try, but hadn't had the time or energy to do it. Ended up hooking three steelhead, but unfortunately only landed one of them. The one that I did land took the rig that is shown below, the other two took a lifter that I was experimenting with Krystel Hackle that is wrapped just behind the head of the fly. It gives it a little more "pop" to it.

Tight Lines,

TB

Thanks for the report.

I'd sure like to see a photo of that experimental lifter!

AndyK,

I don't have a pic of the lifter b/c I'm at work (looking at I-fish). But the attached picture shows what the krystal hackle looks like. When tying it in, I wrap the lifter material almost all the way to the head. After tying that off, I cut a small piece of the krystal hackle ( about 1 inch) and wrap that right up to the bead on the head. After tying that off, I then tie in the white yarn. I then trim the yarn and hackle so that it rides just past the bend in the hook. It looks pretty darn good. When the white yarn gets wet, the krystal hackle tends to give the fly that extra "pop".

Also, I tend to use the orange hackle, when tying cab eggs, and the pink hackle when tying lifters. But the white hackle also looks good on both the cab egg and the lifter.

So I was finally able to get a picture of the lifter with the hackle. Slow and Low pm'd me about posting one, so I relented and the following is a couple of shots of the lifter. This one is tied with the orange hackle, and looks pretty good (besides the amount of thread around the bead.)

This picture doesn't show the body of the lifter as well, but it gives a better idea as to what it looks like from the side/rear view.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the photo.

I wonder if the fly will work just as well without the egg veil?

It probably would, but for me it's just piece of mind. If it works, don't change it right??? So for now, I'm going to keep tying them this way and see how they do for a while.

I think the veil (the glo bug yarn) is the main thing that makes all those egg patterns work so well. I have tried egg patterns with plastic beads that look exactly like a salmon egg, but didn't catch a thing. When I switched to a chenille patterns of the same collor, with globug yarn veil, I started hooking fish. I think the yarn makes the fly look more natural under water. I have also noticed that lifters with no yarn hook less fish... except when fishing for coho.
