Default ODFW Master Hunter Program???

Has anyone here gone through the master hunter program to get priority access on special damage hunts?

It sounds like a good deal for an avid sportsman like myself if the program really is as good as ODFW makes it sound.

Any input would be appreciated.

Mike

I've put in the past three successive years, as a Master Hunter. The first year, nothing. Last year I was draw number two (guaranteed to hunt) the Tillamook blimp base ( http://www.ifish.net/board/showthrea...lk#post1037362 ) until it became politically incorrect and was cancelled. 2006, nothing. Remember though, you have to select a county to apply for and so that choice will greatly affect your chances of being drawn. All it really does do for you (and, this could be significant) is to put you (along with other MH's) at the top of the list if you apply within the designated timeframe. Good luck! Don

I did it in Washington and it is sweet. I don't know if Oregon is the same, so this is probably of limited use. It is by no means a sure bet in Washington, but that is mostly due to a good ole' boy system of operating the damage hunts. It sounds like Oregon is more organized in that regard. That said, I didn't feel like spike hunting this year as I would have had to drive to washington for the weekend from eugene so I shot my cow elk on Aug. 1, the opener.

There's another value, and that's when you knock on doors for birds/rats/predators -- and yes, even bigger game -- and you can tell the landowner that you're an Oregon Master Hunter. I know a guy who has little business cards printed up that shows his MH credentials. It's one of those intangible things that may not make the difference, but it sure can't hurt.
