New Fishing Mag on the Market
There is a new fishing magazine on the market and it is a dandy. Its called Salmon & Steelhead Journal. It is very in depth with lots of details and specifics on different places to fish and how to do it.
Its being put out and edited by Pat Hoglund, you may recognize his name as years ago he was the editor of Fishing and Hunting News. This magazine is nothing like F&H news. This is a bound and fully glossy magazine and its good. The January issue has a great article on the Hood River Broodstock program as well as many steelhead destinations. If you get a copy read the first page which I would almost call a mission statement and you will see what Pat is all about. Class!!!!!
He will be at the Portland show selling subscriptions. With new subscripiton you are entered into a drawing for a trip to Alaska with me on the Nushagak fully outfitted in Columbia Sportswear.
At the show also see the Kings for Kids booth as they will be raising money for less fortuanate kids. I have also donated a trip to Alaska for them.
If I book as many trips as I am donating I will be doing great  . Just kidding they are both good causes and am glad to do it.
Stop by and say hi at my booth, its nice to meet you folks and fun to put a face to all the code names.

How do we go about finding a subscription for this new magazine. Going to have to look for it on the magazine racks soon.
Thanks, Steve

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
Ive checked it out on-line. It just looks like glorified Hinting and fishing news rag to me. Same columnists. Same map features. I hope it isnt just another Pat Hoglund ego boosting rag like HUnting and Fishing news was. I wonder if this rag will way over state the size of fish too. According to the publication theses guys did Oregon had more 50+lb salmon then AK.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
Black Dog why is it you always seam to come to Travis's side when someone has a difference of opinion  I think he is a big boy and does not need baby siting, ya I know that he must be your friend . I don't care if he is you brother when you pop in to defend or back him up you are just starting trouble that could be avoided. Give your opinion and leave it at that
Please take my statement with a grain of salt and before getting mad first think about what I have said.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I purchased a subscription at the Puyallup show. I find it very informative.
But, at $19.95 for 4 issues, it was a little steep.
I also don't like the fact that they give a map to EVERY hole on the river the authors are writing about!!!!

Weeeeeeeeeee. Another magazine that from the looks of it is designed to boost the people who wrote the articles ego. I guess it makes you a better fisherman if you tell everybody else where to go. Coming soon: More crowds on your favorite river system near you!!!

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I'm thinking there are some people that need to go back and read this post
http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb....c;f=1;t=033669
and then take a close look at themselves before they post. There comes a point where all the griping about every little detail is beyond annoying.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
As an incorrigable fishing magazine junkie, I appreciate Travis taking the time to point out this new magazine. I'll give it a read, and if I think it's worth it, I'll subscribe. I think the "critics" have gotten a bit out of hand around here lately.
Thanks Travis.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
Please don't take what I wrote and blow it out of proportion. I have nothing aginst Hunting & Fishing news or Travis for posting about a new magazine on the market.
My point was that let people express their opinion, you post yours and leave it at that...
I see a trend here that usually turnes into a lot more then just posting of opinions. I have heard alot of good things about Fins feathers & furs and it's great that Travis is donating his services to a good cause.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I looked at it the other day and thought it was pretty good. It had some of the old columnists from F&H News, the good ones they let go when they scaled back.
It has nothing to do with F&H and I'm sure will cover some pretty good stuff in the future.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
You can find info about the magazine online through their website, which due to the rules can't be listed here. However, if a guy were to enter 'salmonandsteelheadjournal' between www. and .com or ina Google search (in quotes with no spaces) you will find the link.
I don't think it's going to be a glorified F&H News. First off, it's not a newspaper. Like Travis stated, it's a bound glossy magazine, like 'Sporting Classics' if you're familiar with that. Also, they are'nt trying to provide 'reports' per se, more features and indepth articles.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I remember a report a few years ago in F&H News, about the guard rail hole on the Nestucca being quoted as "white hot". Funny, I fished there several times that year, and only remember a couple coming out of there. I didn't hook any there myself. I asked a few locals, and they said that it wasn't real good fishing, just one here and there. And judging by only a couple people fishing, it was bad info to the F&H News I suppose. But after that publication, wow, you couldn't get a spot, and you still couldn't get a fish.
I found the reports to be very inaccurate. I hope this new magazine is better. I guess I need to post my name on this one, per AUP.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
Travis,
Thanks for the information! I signed up for the magazine and I'M SURE I'll be seeing you on the Nush this summer!
Here are the reasons I NEED to win: (soft violin music begins to play...)
1. I won't ever be able to afford the trip on my own (tears well up) until I'm in my mid 50's and the kids are out of college.
2. My wife and I have three beautiful children, all under the age of 3 1/2, and she's home full time with the kiddo's since our last was born recently. Since #3, my rods are literealy in storage - I simply don't get the chance to fish much anymore! (Krocodile tears begin to stream down)
3. I'm a teacher who 'teaches' over 200 kids in my schedule. I'm grading at night until I can't see straight! With depleting funds, the number of students I see will only get bigger! AND I REALLY NEED TO GO FISHING IN ALASKA to re-charge my batteries in July!
4. I'm a really fun guy!
I look forward to the big drawing. If I don't win, it'll probably break me......

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I received the first issue a couple of weeks ago, and it is NOTHING LIKE F&H NEWS.
The new magazine is a quality product. The articles are well-written and the glossy printing is excellent. Check it out.
By the way, I really look forward to the delivery of my STS magazine, but it drives me nuts as to how many errors/typos/poor usages of grammar there are in that magazine. Don't even get me started on F&H News, either. Does this bother others, too?

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
My first thought when I visited the website was that it was a shiny version of F&H news. I'm going to hold off until I see the first issue this weekend. Just like I did with F&H news, if it ends up being the same thing in a shiny cover I'll not renew. Seems simple enough. My thought is when you get special writers covering more than Oregon, Washington and maybe Alaska there becomes too much about fishing other than salmon/steelhead. Dave Schamp is knowledgable and has the contacts to get good/timely info. I don't know about the other writers. We'll just see how it plays out.
Blackdog...Dude at least wait for 5 or 6 posts to occur before you hammer the keys on a Travis post. It looks like you guys are siamese twins. (just having a little fun at your expense...Don't take it as a personal slam). I wish I knew you, it would make it more fun...

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Willierower: Which were the same old columnist from F&H news? I have never written for F&H. I don't think Abe or Al Cunang do. Chris Batin is the premier writer in Alaska, and Terry Rudnick is tops in our area. And Scott Stouder is one of the best in the country. One reason I choose to write for Pat is BECAUSE this is NOT just another F&H news. Take another look. I thought he covered the entire NW well and did a ton of research to give great details on where to stay, camp find a guide, buy tackle and buy dinner. Each of the writers wrote about areas they knew intimately. What more do you want?

I subscribed at the show as well. I will give it one year to decide if it's worth the 20 bucks. I do however wish that this wasn't a quarterly magazine, but a bi-monthly magazine.

Re: New Fishing Mag on the Market
I happily paid the $20 after seeing who was behind the magazine. I stopped my subscription to brand X when they lost these guys and started selling more advertising (WOW, these guys musta not been paid very well!) and one had to search hard to find an informative article!
Great new magazine -- I'm glad I sprang the $20 from my purse  and I'm really sorry to inform you guys, but I'M GONNA WIN THAT TRIP -- and I won't be crying for y'all when I do! I've been wanting to fish in Alaska for 50 years -- since my aunt and uncle homesteaded up there and I used to hear all their tales of hunting and fishing!
