Default Coos Bay Help

It looks like next weekend I have to go to Coos Bay. I haven't ever done much in that area and my son and I will be pretty bored because the women are all going to be planning a wedding so I was hoping an IFISHER could help me out.

My son really likes to crab but I don't want to drag my boat down for this trip so my first question would be are there any public docks to crab off of on Coos Bay? He also likes to jig herring so I wondered if there was anywhere to do that in Coos Bay?

We will be back in Coos Bay over Memorial Day weekend for the wedding and I will be bringing my boat so if anyone can fill me in on the boatability of the bay and tips for where to launch and crab/fish I would appreciate it. My boat limits me from heading for the big blue so I will inside the bay.

Thanks in advance.

Charleston Boat Basin would be one place to start. It's west out of Coos Bay. Now I haven't done anything since I was kid down there (lets just say a lot of years ago) but at the time there were plenty of docks to crab from and if the herring are there, who knows. Use catch a lot of flounder off the docks as well. There is also a launch out by the North Bend airport and one in Eastside (go south out of Coos Bay and stay to the left). There may be other, but I'm not familiar with where. If I were going down Memorial weekend I would head up the Umpqua for some Shad fishing. Should be good about that time. Hope this is some help!

You can crab off the docks in Charleston and jig there also. I'm not sure if the herring are in just yet, but there are usually some random fish around the docks looking for a free meal. Go from Coos Bay to charleston following the signs off Hwy 101. Go to the boat launch and on the right side is a set of docks. Go to the end and there usually are people down there doing this very thing. Good luck.

Grits: If I were you I would reconsider takeing the boat. We go to Charlston (a 4hr pull ) just for the Crabbing, it's the best!! This time of the year you will probly limet out ASAP. Think it over Anyway good luck with what ever you do.

Ram, no they don't allow anyone on the T dock anymore due to old age and liability if someone fell through.

The bay is really easy to navigate actually. The two best areas are just outside of the charleston boat basin and on the other side of the bay from the empire boat launch, so the total distance is under .25 mile. If you need specifics let me know.

Tailchaser. Is the T dock still available? Does Roseburg still give permission for their dock? Thats where we used to do our dock crabbing. It was pretty effective.

Thanks for the info. I may reconsider and pull the boat down.

Is the bay easy to navigate?
