Pickled Squid?
Anyone know how to make pickled squid for sturgeon bait at home? Can you share a recipe? Should I forget about it and buy it instead?
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Re: Pickled Squid?
Ask Dipnet she is the Queen of Pickled squid! I say this with great respect. Posted by Dipnet onother thread.

All I ever use is pickled squid. I have been known to use the same little piece of squid all day and catch as many as 20 fish. My husband uses smelt and if I start outcatching him, he switches to squid. The nice thing about the squid is as soon as you release one fish, you can get right back out. With smelt, you usually have to rebait after every fish or two. Just my .02!!!!

Re: Pickled Squid?
Here you all go with the recipe:
Pickled Squid
2 cups white vinegar
2 Tbls. sugar
2 Tbls. salt
2 Tbls. pickling spices
1/3 bottle Mikes Herring Oil
Mix all together and add your squid. Let sit for a day or two minimum in the refrigerator. You will have to keep mixing it up as the oil will separate out if you don't. You can also pickle smelt in this.
Now go catch some fish!!!!!!

Re: Pickled Squid?
You can also substitute the Herring Oil by using Marie's Herring Oil.
my 2 cents worth.

Re: Pickled Squid?
If you were to seal the pickled squid in jars, how long would it last?
I think it would be great on halibut. I bet you could even pickle little octopus that way.
Steelies might even like the squid. Anyone try that?
Thanks!

I don't know Keta, you'd have to ask the sturgeon that!!!!
No problem Small Fry, I got the recipe from an ifisher last year who was willing to share, so thought I'd pass it on!!

Re: Pickled Squid?
WD, I would think it would last as long as the stuff you get at G.I. Joes, which is a very long time if refrigerated!

Re: Pickled Squid?
Fishuntr2 speaks the truth,
It's basically the same recepie I use to pickle salmon and steelhead minus the Habeneros, Lemon slices, and Bay leaf. I'm not at home right now or I'de give you the whole recipe. Although I don't eat the squid after it's done (well, for the most part), I keep my squid food grade, that is, minimum 2.5% acidity (half white vinegar half water). Haven't tried the herring oil yet (Marie's Herring oil would be my first choice of course). My last batch I added three cloves of garlic and they were all over that stuff. Look up pickled fish recipes here on Ifish then play around with it a bit. Try shrimp oil? Hot peppers? The important thing is to boild the sugar, salt and pickling spices (available bulk at WinCo or Freddy's) together for a couple minutes, let it cool, then pour it over the raw squid. When it's purple, it's done. I keep it in old mayo jars for easy storage.

Re: Pickled Squid?
Printed out and followed the recipe religously. Except I didnt have herring oil, so I used Mikes (herring)Gel Scent. Coated each of about 2 dozen last years smelt, put in a used pickle jar, filled with the solution, stuffed it with the smelt and will let it sit for 2 days minimum. Shaken, not stirred, several times a day. From 2 doz smelt, had about six left over. Put in a zip-lock baggie with the remainder of the solution, scent and it's sitting in the fridge, too. My middle daughter is flying in tomorrow, and has never fished before. She's currently carrying my grandson, so will take the both of them out fishing on Saturday. Then when he's born (I bought him a new boat for a birthday present) He'll at least have an idea of whats in store for him

Re: Pickled Squid?
Keep it simple. Save your old pickle juice in the jars after you have eaten all the pickles. Put the squid in the juice with a healthy dash of Garlic powder and let sit overnite. They are ready and they work as well as any sturgeon bait I have ever used. They last as long as you keep them referig. Come home from fishing screw the lid on tight and put them back in the refer.

Re: Pickled Squid?
I am excited about this. I am going to pickle some up asap along with some octopus. I think it will be killer on the salmon, steelies and halibut. I love Ifish for this reason, thank you Dipnet for the information.
