Default Was Today A Gill Net Day?

I was out fishing today and there was a gill netter working the area between Warrior Rock and the top of Sand Island... was it open today for Springers? If he was fishing for sturgeon that is a pretty funny place to run the nets dont you think?

Just wondering...

We tried the MC for sturgeon and only got a couple of shakers. We figured we would try the CR below St. Helens in the plume. The seagulls are out in force waiting for the smelt so we thought the sturgeon might be, we were right  We ended up boating 2 keeper sized fish and numerous 3ft+ shakers on the big river before we switched over to Springers. No stikes, hits or errors on the chromers but they will be here soon

Sturgeon nets only, but they can keep "by catch" and are required to report it. There are no observers to ensure their honesty. Bring a video camera ... no resuscitation boxes on a sturgeon boat. I'd like to know if they are mistreating fish or catching more than they report.

2 years ago I was Sturgeon fishing at Warrior rock on Feb. 1st, and saw a "Gill Net" boat working that same stretch.

The scary thing was he put 6 Chinook in the boat in 3 passes. It made me think a whole lot different about fishing for springers early....

Hence my Valentine Springer last year

I think WA has paid fish checkers for the nets. Does Oregon? I believe it is through the state Police.
