Default Okuma Avenger + Braided Line = Bad?

I picked up an Okuma Avenger reel that I intended using to jig/float fish for steelhead. I went to get it spooled today and the clerk told me that braided line would cut into the plastic peice located on the bail of the reel, and thus would cause problems when casting. I took his advice and did not get my reel spooled.

Can anyone confirm this? I'm really kicking myself for not getting the Epixor :depressed: (fyi, I can't take the reel back because I lost the reciept and have used it twice).

I'm using Fireline and haven't had a problem. I do know that braided casts difficultly on the Avenger, or maybe i'm just casting-challenged.

Thanks for the reply fishnpray. About how many trips have you made using the AV with braid on it? Also, did you spool it yourself or have it done by a tackle shop?

Reeeee-diculous. I just checked my AV-30 with 20 lb. power pro for grooves. None whatsoever after 20-30 bobber and jig trips. Sounds like high pressure sales tactics to me.

I get everything spooled up at Joes on 82nd. Those guys always treat me right.

I've made enough to know it doesn't groove. Prolly bout 35 or so. Nothing doing. Maybe I need better glasses.

It will groove, buy Shimano or Penn, not Okuma you`ll be happier in the long run.

If it's the line roller yea're talkin 'bout I'll give yea a tip ( anal retentive but a tip just the same ). If its black, I've marked the roller with white out, if it's silver or gold, i mark it with a black marker. I mark towards the edges- not in the grove where the line rides. before I start fishing for the day, i pull line against the drag ( I,m titghtening the drag anyway ) and check to make suure the roller rolls. On the rare ocassion when I have a fish on ( and taking line ) i give a quick glance to make sure she's a turning, if it's not then i know I'll be taking a look the next day.

Long winded I know, pardon me.........

Feedback appreciated, Derek

I've been using Tufline XP on my Okuma Epixor for two years without any problems; go for it.

If it spins free it should last for a while. If it stops spinning it won't last a few hours.
