Lahaina / Kona
Although it might be a little late to get on a boat, I was just wondering if anybody knew how the fishing is this time of year over there? We are going to be on Maui for six days and then to Hawaii for another six. Thanks in advance. Scott.

Re: Lahaina / Kona
This time of year is on and off. One day good, next day bad one day good, three days bad, two days good, one day bad. You get the idea. Anything can happen though as granders have been caught every month of the year in the past.
My buddy just called from Molokai and said they have been banging the yellowfin tunas at the bouys (Molokai Trench) and they've been running approx. 90lbs. with a bigger one here and there. The charter boats from Maui usually fish this area that lies just West of Lanai.
Here's a pic of the bottom. The trench is at the top right corner and the island to the top right is Lanai.

Who are you fishing with in Kona?

Re: Lahaina / Kona
4 trips to the islands in 15 years, and no fish to show for. Guess im one of the unlucky few..
Like TT said, its hit or miss, and there are granders caught every month out of the year in Kona. Marlin Magic, Start me Up, and Desperado are good boats out of the Honokohau Marina in Kona.
Kona is a summer deal so ive heard.
How about a inshore reef fishing trip? They have lots of giant travally over there.
Check out bloody decks dot com, there are reports from the islands on that site.

Re: Lahaina / Kona
The summer of 2006 was one of the best seasons that many can remember. Marlin Mike and I ran into Capt. Gene Vanderhoek of the Sea Genie II in Cabo this year and he said it was off the hook on big blue marlin. They frequently caught fish from 500-800 pounds and of course they caught a grander in March (I think it was). There are always a resident popluation of YFT's with the porpise school, but the tuna run is actually is June - September. The spring brings the massive Mahi Mahi runs. I just Looked at the weekly big fish list in the local newspaper online, West Hawaii Today. It looks like plenty of smaller blue marlin, spearfish and striped marlin are the big items on the list. If you want to follow it, here is the link:
http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/sports/big_fish_list/
You have to sign up for a free password to use this site. Also keep in mind that the big fish lists only fish caught on the West side of the Big Island (Kona) and doesn't include Maui, or other islands.
Don't forget the bottom fishing in Hawaii either. It is very good for many types and sizes of fish.
Good Luck,
Tower Todd

Re: Lahaina / Kona
I would do a full day trip, and be on a boat that is going out to deep water.
If you go to the back side of Lani this time of year you can get into some fish.
Z/F stated Start me Up and Desperado, I have fish with both of those and caught fish everytime. Desperado is on a bouy at Kanapali and Start Me Up is at Lahina harbor.
I am heading over to Maui on the 16th of this month, and I will be fishing.....maybe we will be on the same boat

My dad and i went fishing for bill fish and tuna in Kona. THe date was 2/16/05. It was tons of fun. We caught countless skip jacks and a nice blue fin. WE hooked up 3 marlin. Here's the info on the privet charter we went on: Capin,Bomboy

Re: Lahaina / Kona
Here's what I know. I have fished in Kona on two occasions on a share boat called Sea Wife Charters (Capt. Tim Cox) ($80 or so). On one occasion in March we got six small ahi with one large wahoo. That was a great day. On another occasion, again in March, we got nothing.
I went out on a share charter in Maui once and we got a nice wahoo about 10 minutes from Lahaina and later, a dorado. I am going to Maui this spring and will be fishing on a share boat, the Start Me Up. I was glad to see the post that they always catch fish. I hope this helps. Good luck to all of us.
