One fish, one method
Ripped this off from the other board.
Lest we forget the heroin ...
Quote:
Live bait for albacore. It's a drug not a fish.
You drop a greenback anchovy into the clear blue water behind your boat. Water so blue it looks like you could dip a bucketfull and the color would be the same. It was the hardest bait to catch out of the tank. You could barely hold onto it when you stuck the ringed #1 hook through the collar. The baitcasting reel clicks slowly as the bait swims. Your reel is freespool, the clicker on. The greenback hits the water and bolts from the boat.
You see them coming like three dogs chasing a ball. The bait panics and runs even faster. The reel clicks speed up a little. If you were not watching you would hear this and know ....... The TUNA! bang into each other, nudging for position, their wings lit and flashing violet and teal. They look like birds, flying through the water. Slow steady movements, side to side, hypnotic. Deceptively slow movements, they burn through the water. They roar past the bait and miss. One fish turns impossibly fast and gulps the bait .....
The reel clicks faster, your heart pounds, your buddies at the rail look on with wild eyes. You count to five as the clicks become a rising scream and you slam the lever forward and the rod buckles tip into the water.
Kentucky Hog Hunter yells out "FRESH" as the reel sings and you fight for possesion of your buckling rod.
TUNA! ... that's what I'm talking about.

Your Killing me John!!
I think you should write a book . You have the talent. Long time no see. I have been out of commission for almost a year. Another back surgery and have been having a hard time with it healing. I didn't have any e-mail for a some time and finally got a new ISP. I hope you had a Great year fishing and catching in 06. Hope to hook up with you this year. Tom

Re: One fish, one method
Trolling a 6lb Skipjack tuna bridled through the top right corner of the eye's paired to a 12/0 Owner Super Mutu circle hook, twenty feet behind the right rigger. Poor skippy is still limping along after a couple of hours, the boat is swaying left to right in 2-3ft seas, speed is less than 2 kts, all of a sudan as your glancing on wake of the now incompetent skippy, a 315lb Yellowfin tuna jumps out of the water 5ft behind the beginning of the wake, Mr Giant is now 5-6 ft out of the water, split second later it dives headfirst and completely shuts the lights off for the Skippy, who has absolutely no idea what as just happened. 50W Avet starts screaming, I run up to the rig, and glance up at Capt Josh, we both signal to eachother. NOW!!!!!!!! Drag as been thrown in strike mode, and the twin 435hp Cat's roar to life, up to 2500rpms, for a long 5 seconds,a big dark plume of diesel exhaust has now appeared, the 130lb class Rogue goes absolutely bendo. the 130 braid is now at angle steeper than 45'. Now 4 hours of torture begins......

The baitcasting reel clicks slowly as the bait swims. Your reel is freespool, the clicker on. The skipper whispers to the deckhand...."hey check that guy out, he has the clicker on. Must be one of the Oregon boys. Oh well the fish are so thick he'll get bit anyways."

Hey Mark .. although I can't think of even one reason to go to Kalifornia .. if I ever find myself there .. I'll make sure I turn the clicker off.
Till then I like the sound .. it's exciting.

Re: One fish, one method
God invented the clicker, so that live bait fisherman could still use both hands to help a buddy gaff their fish! I too am a fan of the buzz, but even more so at strike and about 10-12 lbs. of drag!

Re: One fish, one method
poleing down a crystal clear flat seeing bonnet head sharks, rays, crabs scurrying for cover.
What's that flash at 2 o'clock? Ah, a bonefish, get ready, he's moving to the right, you see him? Drop the fly to the left and front of him....strip, strip!!! he's got it. The ghost of the flats, wadda fish! zoom across the flat dragging your line with him and do a 90 degree turn without slowing down........a silver bullet.
Permit, make the bonefish look brave, talk about spooky...watched a small school of fifteen pounders streak across a flat after being spooked by the shadow of a pelican....shallow water, they actually created a rooster tail behond them...fast, fast and faster.
How about tarpon up to 200 lbs in 5 ft of water, if that don't get your blood pressure up, it simply means you're dead. Hook up and in 5 ft of water this magnificent creature launches itself completely clear of the water. The sight and sound of his rattling will never be forgotten...
Man o man, I loved that stuff. Time to move on to less crowded wtaers though........new lessons to be learned, different fish to catch. I look forward to our upcoming adventures in Coffman Cove, Alaska
