Default hunt to eat

in your area, what could you eat if you where limited to small game and birds. as a everyday need to eat thing. in lapine it would get real hungry quick. we have crows, gray tree rats, feral cats, a few doves, a few quail, and a few ducks and geese. armed with my trusty single shot .22 rimfire. if i was the only one trying to survive, i would have no problem collecting enough protein. but with 15,000 others in the lapine basin, it would get tough fast.

Are you talking just for one person or do you mean if everyone in the area had to do it?

If you mean everyone in the area then few places in the US or the world would qualify that's why we have farms, factories etc. When Lewis and Clark came out the Indian tribes were at about the population the land could sustain and even then sometimes they starved and they grew their own food in some cases as well. The sea can support sustenance living far better than the land so many tribes that lived close to the oceans or large rivers may have been at populations beyond what the land alone could support.

If you are talking just one guy alone with a .22 then I would choose southern Oregon along the Rouge probably near to the coast. Lots of small game and it doesn't get to cold in the winters. Other places in Oregon would be pretty lean especially come winter time.

According to the British SAS survival handbook, any mammal on Earth can be eaten, with the exception of the liver of a Polar Bear, which is toxic.

However, just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean that you SHOULD do it.

So......make sure your neighbors pets are locked up if they want to keep them.

Not to make a joke or anything.....but the very best jerky that I have ever eaten was beaver........

I get a damage complaint every once in a while and look forward to the jerky meat...

I live in town,, I'd have to hold up Safeway to get my meat.

I understand the question though......

Eventually Selectivity would broaden. I have heard that during the Civil war Night Crawlers were considered good Table fare.........Rats,,,etc.

Any Kind of birds. Would you included the availability of a Freezer ?

Well, today, on my walk with the dog--from my front door--I got a drake woodie and had a shot at a couple of mallards. Could've shot a beaver, too. I also shot my deer this year by going for a walk. But I don't live in town.

Lots of chipmunks around here, too. I wonder how they taste?

Tree Huggers are good deep fat fried, it burns off all the hair.
PETAs are very very bitter and also kind of fishy.

Lots to choose from as long as everyone wasn't also hunting for sustenance. Around here: ducks and geese, rabbits, turkeys, squirrels, etc and of course a deer or 2. I see quite a few beaver in the Willamette.
