Default Ifish 2007 Trophy Page

Maybe we can have a mod stick this one up top as well.

Since Dad got her on New Years Day this will make a good one to start out with.

So far I don’t have any 2007 photos with horns. If I did I would probably get a visit from OSP. Ha!

These are pics of my wife Nicole and myself with her Steens Mt. antelope and our Maupin unit elk. She had a more successful season than I but we both had a lot of fun.

Here's some '07 special speck season carnage. . .
We hunted with Darren Roe of Roe Outfitters. . .Klamath Falls. I would HIGHLY recommend Darren for any type of hunting for a vast myriad of reasons.

FYI. . .that's not just our limit. We had three other hunters and took birds two days. First day yielded one bird shy of a five man limit. Next day gave us a limit. . .the bulk of which came in ten minutes time!

Good times.

Here is my stepson Robert and his first archery harvest. I took him with me to California to hunt wild pigs, and the guide let Robert shoot squirrels after our morning hunt. The juvenile license was only $9.20 whether the kid is a resident or non. Unforutnately, I missed one pig and had to cut the hunt short due to a herniated disc in my back ouch.

Cool Re: Ifish 2007 Trophy Page

Hi all,

Since I just passed my trapping test and wanted to get started right away I set out a trap line near Sheridan. After a hard night of sleeping, I graciously share with you my harvest. And yes, for those of you who are thinking "Man that guy worked hard", I did sit down and drink a cold one after a long day on the trap line. Hope you enjoy the pic!

Here's my buck from my friends ranch in Monument Oregon in 2006. Got him on the 4th day of hunting, and he was with 2 other bucks. Of the other 2, one was a smaller 3x3 and the other was a 4x4. I passed on the 4x4 because this one had taller tines and a wider rack. One shot from 225 yards put him down quick.

Here is my first bull(2006). My dad's ankles were shot, so I almost decided not to go. A friend of mine stopped by our shop and I asked him if he had ever been hunting and he said "no, but I wouldn't mind watching". I had never been elk hunting but figured we would give it our best. After getting some pointers from Kip out at Adventure Outfitters, we packed up the truck and headed to the Northside Unit. We were going to bring a quad, but I thought we wouldn’t be able to get an animal in the truck with the quad. We also bagged bringing a trailer, and brought a big tent. I was very lucky to have my dad add some items that you have to have on an elk hunt, but not necessarily on a deer hunt. The biggest items were a bone saw and a pack frame. I didn't really know how big elk were, so I packed the items and started to realize this was going to be quite the adventure if I found an elk.

We drove up by Kenny Meadows at about 11:30 PM and then headed about 4 miles north down some small finger roads to find a camp. Saw lots of sign in the area, and figured the site was OK. Camped there 1 night, woke up and decided to look for something better. Scouted all day and found a new site only about 2 miles from our original site. We set up camp and got ready for the big hunt the next day. I'll never forget asking my friend if he had a warm sleeping bag. He said "yep, it's about 4 inches thick". It was a bi-mart special made for sleepovers and he froze the entire trip. Lesson learned.

Opening morning we walked to our stand and sat for about 4 hours, freezing as we had not anticipated just how cold it would get. We saw several deer, but no elk and we didn't hear one shot the entire morning. That afternoon we drove to another area and did some walking, but still heard no shots and we had yet to see elk. Kip had told me I could go the entire week without seeing any bulls, so I started to think we might be in it for the long haul. That evening we decided to stay in the area for the rest of our hunt and hope some bulls would be pushed into the area.

Next morning we went to the same area, just one finger over. At about 8:00 I spotted 4 elk running down a draw about 400 yards out and figured they were headed toward the bottom of our bowl. I snuck over the back side of our finger and sprinted to the bottom in the hopes they would pop out. I found a rock to prop my rifle on and got ready. At that moment 4 big bulls came walking out into the open bowl bellow. I was shaking at the sight of them, and realized I would have to settle down and make a shot. I picked one that I thought was the best looking, breathed and took a shot. My 340 Weatherby kicked like a mule, but absolutely nothing happened. The elk looked around, as if to say "keep it down over there". I racked another shell and lined up on the same bull. This time I heard a loud whack after I shot and knew I had connected. I didn't see him drop, and watched as 2 of the bulls trotted towards me. My original 2 shots were at 265 yards, and I was shooting from high on a hill down into the bowl. I thought the 2 other bulls had taken off into the trees so I focused on the 2 headed towards me. I was franticly looking at each one to see if one was wounded. After hearing the whack I thought for sure one would be limping. Then again, I had also heard elk are very tough and I started to believe the .340 wasn’t doing the job. As they got within 125 yards of me, I lined up on the one that was walking slower, and took a 3rd shot. At this point, they took off running and I figured I had just blow the opportunity of a life time. I had a 4th shot, but figured I had to stop. I didn't want to risk shooting 2 animals, and felt terrible that I might have wounded one with my first shots.

After waiting 10 minutes, we headed down to see if we could find some sign of a hit and start tracking. We first went to where I had taken my last and closest shot. There was no blood at the point of impact, so we slowly walked in a circle, expanding after each pass. After we had worked a circle about 100 yards in diameter, we agreed to go check on the location of the first 2 shots. As I walked towards the area, I saw a horn sticking up from the grass and knew I had a bull down. He was down right were I had taken the second shot, so the sound of the hit was correct. I also came to the realization that the .340 does the job when the bullet is places in the right spot. I was shocked to see he was a 6x6 and we were grinning at our beginners luck.

I had never skinned or gutted an elk but I had dressed a deer a month prior so I didn’t have too hard of a time. We had a hand saw which took quite a while to get through the spine. By 12:00 we had it quartered and ready to pack out. Our first hike was about 1/2 a mile straight up the bowl to where the truck was. We took all of our gear, the head and the hide on the first trip. It took us 2 hours for the first trip, so we got out the maps and found a road that was closer to the quarters of meat. We drove about 6 miles around and thought we were in the right area. As we walked towards the location on the GPS, I noticed we were actually about 1 mile from out destination. I told my friend to go back to the truck and find the closer road on the map, and I would keep walking towards the meat. I arrived at the quarters by about 3:30 and started to panic. We had yet to get any meat in the truck, and I couldn’t reach my friend on the radio. I got a quarter on my back and headed in the general direction of the truck. Our new route was about the same distance, but the first 1/4 mile was flat, and the next 1/4 mile was really steep. It was steep enough that we had to use a 100 foot rope to get up some of the parts. My friend would climb 100 feet ahead of me, wrap the rope around a tree and I would pull myself to him. We got the first 2 quarters in the truck by 6, at which point it got dark. To find the truck at night we got innovative and opened the doors with the tunes playing pretty loud. We also got the cab lights on so we could see the truck once we were within a couple hundred yards of it. We took a break to eat some chips as our first meal of the day which gave us some energy. After getting pumped up we headed down for the last 2 quarters. The flat stretch was fine, but then we had to cross a creek which was pretty tough at night. Then the hill which was exhausting. The last quarter went into the truck at precisely 8:21PM and I collapsed for several minutes. Packing out 4 quarters of meat was single handedly the most grueling physical task I have ever accomplished.

We headed back to camp and my friend had spent enough nights in the cold sleeping bag. So we cut camp that night and drove all the way back to Portland. We got home at about 4:30 AM and slept very well that morning.

So I learned a lot this last season. Next time I will go with a bigger party, or bring a quad or a mule for packing out meat. I will also be bringing a cordless sawzall to help get through the bone. And I am positive my friend will be getting a new sleeping bag. I have a huge amount of respect for elk and look forward to going again next season.

I had my skulls done by Beacon Hill Biological (google it) A.K.A. Skull Duggery and they look unbelievable.

And here is a picture of my coyote from this year in West Linn.

This hunt took place on April 7, 2007, which was opening day of Oregon's Youth Turkey Hunt.

We arrived at our hunting area Friday afternoon. After seeing several Toms strutting their stuff, Robert and Jacob were extremely excited for Saturday morning to be here. We waited until about 9:30 pm Friday night to set up our blinds and get our decoys stakes in the ground for placement on opening morning.

I hunted with my step son Robert and my friend Rick hunted with his girl friends son Jacob. Robert is in all 3 pictures and Jacob is the one with the big Tom where both boys are pictured.

Saturday morning found me and Robert in our blind by 5:30 am and the rain had just started to fall. The turkeys seemed to fly down late due to the rain, which was fine because the blind kept us dry. At around 7:00 am the rain started to die off and we heard our first gobble. The Tom was probably less than 150 yards, and we started to call. First on the seen and about 80 yards out was a group of 10 hens and 2 jakes. The hens jumped a neighboring fence and the jakes stuck around listening to our calls.

We tried to get the jakes to come in, but were not successful and like the hens they to jumped the fenced after about 15 or 20 min of cat and mouse. Right around 7:30am another group of about 4 or 5 hens came strolling by again at right about 80 yards. By this time, we had heard several gobbles, but had still not been able to get a Tom in to our set up. A few minutes after the hens showed up, a big Tom came by following the hens; however, after looking our direction, he didn't like something and decided to bail rather quickly. He was a nice, nice Tom with about a 8 inch beard.

A little disheartened, we watched the hens feed for awhile and then clear the fence just like the ones before. We had some lag time, but kept calling and it wasn't long before we had a group of 3 jakes that appeared to be traveling the same path as the hens; however, this time I was able to turn them our way, and after calling lightly, I was able to get them to within 25 yards for a shot.

Robert had initially wanted to take one with a bow, but with the Jakes thinking twice about the situation, they wouldn't commit to coming in to bow range, so Robert took the sure thing and with a shot gun bagged his second turkey in two seasons. It was now around 8:15 am and the first bird was down. We waited until the other jakes left the area, retrieved Robert's prize, and got some pics.

Rick and I had agreed to turn on the walkie talkies at 10:00 am and by 10:05, he had not, so I figured he and Jacob had birds close by. I figured right, because at 10:10 am Jacob harvested his first gobbler. About a 20 to 25 lb Tom with a 6 inch beard. It took some heavy calling by both Rick and Jacob, but they were able to get the bird to finally jump a fence and at 25 yards Jacob put the hammer on him, and we had 2 birds on the ground and two smiling faced boys.

Here is our story of the last 2 days of turkey hunting. A bit windy, but for the amount of hunting we did, it is short.

April 15, 2007 opening morning. First up were some hens with 2 jakes in tow around 6:45 or 7:00 am. Although it was my shot, because Robert bagged one last week during the OYTH, I told Rob if he wanted to take one of these little guys, he could, so he grabbed his bow and I grabbed the camera, and whack 6 yard shot on film with a bow, and wouldn't you know it, as the jake is flapping his wings dying, gobble, gobble, gobble just outside my blind, and I couldn't get that boy back for myself. Not to worry, that part is coming.

After waiting for the birds to leave the immediate area, we quickly took some pics of Robert and his jake, and jumped back in the blind. We heard several gobbles and then watched 6 nice toms strutting and chasing each other around about 55 yards away, but I couldn't convince one to come in. We waited another 4 or 5 hours in the blind listening to birds sound off all around and finally decided to venture out to see what we could do. From a ridge, we spotted 2 toms in a pasture below, and knowing the escape route from hunting this property last fall 06, of which I ate tag soup, I had Rob make a wide circle and push the toms to the corner, so they would jump the fence and start up the draw. He didn't get within 125 yards and they were over the fence and coming my way. It went perfect, except they busted me drawing my bow and split. If I had the gun, one would have been dead, but I am glad I didn't because, of this the next sequence.

After blowing the drive, and doing a little thinking, I decided to move the blind about 50 yards closer to where the big boys were playing earlier in hopes of a good fly down in the morning, so we moved the blind, got in side and waited. At about 6:00 pm I heard some gobbles, so I started yelping with the box call, and they were definately answering me. As the gobbles got closer, I got more excited, Rob and I knew they were close, but I didn't realize just how close, it had been a few minutes, so I did a few more yelps and then they both lit off just outside my blind. Talk about a heart pumper. I didn't know turkey hunting was this much fun until that moment, because those boys were actually talking to me.

Although they were out of sight, they were right there, and I had to put the box call down and grab my bow with out blowing this opportunity. Just after I got my bow up to the window, a full strutting bird appears 8 yards away walking toward my decoys. He didn't like my decoys or something, he quit strutting, then he stared through me for a few seconds in the blind, seemed like an eternity, and then walked to my right, which put a tree between us, so I drew, now my problem was not having the best hole to shoot through, because of the tree, but I made it work, with a whack, he stumbled about 15 yards and he was down. That turkey broke my arrow when he flapped his wing. Apparently, him being quarting and me shooting him betwent the wings, he must have flapped on impact, because the last third of the arrow was broke, but it was a pass through and stuck in the ground. He was an older jake with a 4 inch beard, and to me more of a trophy than this next bird.

April 16, 2007. I am going to shorten this one up. It was my shot again, because Robert opted for the small jake giving him 2 in a row. We got in blind same as usual an hour before daylight. The sun came up gobble, gobble, gobble, in the trees just in front of us, and then the fly down. Hens were yelping everywhere and so I started yelping, I got a nice 4 inch beard to come to 38 yards, but at the time, I didn't know the exact yardage, so I let him walk. ,

A few hours had went by and I had been calling spiraticly as I heard gobbles, but didn't think anything was really close. I took a break for about 20 or 30 minutes with no calling and was drifting off to sleep a bit when I was whipped back to reality by a gobbler lighting off about fifty yards away. He had come in silent, lit off and I speculate he had been puting on a show for my decoys, but I wasn't looking out the windows of my blind (windows zip open and closed)in every direction, and by the time I saw him he was on his way out and wouldn't come back to my yelps.

We stayed in blind, with hope something would eventually come by. We heard gobbles fairly close and threw a couple of yelps. Robert has better hearing and had me convinced the toms were coming from a different direction than they actually were, I did another yelp and they were close and closing fast. By the time I figured out that they were on the other side, I was panicked to say the least. I had to zip the windows shut and get the other window open without being detected. The toms had to drop down a little dip about 45 yards out, which gave me the opportunity I needed. I saw an 8 inch beard and opted for the shot gun. 30 yards out, boom with the 12 guage and I had a beautiful tom, my first long beard.

The highlight of this trip was 2 bow harvests in the same day. The camera battery died, but I couldn't have got mine on video any way, the way it happened Rob was stuck out of sight and didn't get to see my bow shot. Having those toms come in gobbling is a rush and now I know why this is so addictive. We are going back next week to try and finish our season.

We did go back and each finished our spring season. I harvested a 4 inch, 6 inch, and 8 1/2 inch bearded turkeys, and Rob harvested a 1 1/2 inch, 4 inch, and 8 1/2 inch bearded turkeys. I left my digital at home and the throw away camera that I used took pictures that are not worth posting but we still had a great time and got enough footage to make a small video, which Limbhanger is going to put together for us. Here are a few wing bone yelpers that I made as well.

Got him this morning in West Linn. It's not too often I get to hunt in shorts and flip flops. Last week I whacked one in the butt but I never found him. Also bellow is one of our turkey hens with chicks. She had about 15 but now they are all gone. I presume some drowned or got lost, but the 'yote had to have been eating some of them. My friend is going to skin it tomorow so I'll check the belly for turkey chicks.

Nice pics. A couple of weeks ago driving south I-5 towards Salem my wife spotted 2 yotes running thru a field somewhere around the Donald area. Have been making that drive for awhile now and that was a first. theres a field further down the highway that has a couple of coyote templates planted in the ground, I guess that keeps the birds away?

I put my wife in for an antelope time for the FIRST time this year.......needless to say, lady luck seems to exist. She missed an absolute monster on Saturday after passing on 11 bucks. Sunday, she was down and out so she decided to take this one......not a bad goat, but nothing like the one she wanted.

3rd bull in 14 years. I passed on a monster at 30 yards because the shot was iffy. Got this guy in to 15 yards.

Great job on a clean kill and thanks for not taking that IFFY shot. I passed a lot of iffy shots this year and also managed to score.
