Re: Hogs!!!
By the way, you may be able to bait them back to that area. I am not 100% sure of the legality of baiting them so please check before doing so but as they are classified as an invasive and not a game species I 'think' it is OK. In any case I have read of digging a trough a foot or so deep, maybe 3' long and a couple wide and layering corn in it, then earth, more corn, etc thereby filling it back up. You might sprinkle additional corn around on top of the ground. This will keep them occupied for a few days during which time you can be taking care of important details such as stoking the BBQ, gathering ammunition, etc. Again - please check the legality of this before proceeding. I read it on a hog hunting forum originating in the South (some fantastic and weird reading there.. would be happy to provide a link if you like).

Re: Hogs!!!
I like bacon, but a couple of folks have said you can't or shouldn't eat the feral hogs? I know domestic hogs carry trichomonas and some other bugs that you have to cook really well to kill.
So, what's the bottom line on eating wild hogs?

Re: Hogs!!!
My understanding is that some of the large boars can taste/smell of urea strongly.. but all others are snackable.
I have noticed it showing up on higher end restaurant menus lately.

Re: Hogs!!!
I've eaten several of them and they are great. Tougher then their domestic partbers, but i lived on the stuff while in college...I would recommend to anyone who go's after them to get sausage made, may be the best i've eaten. Can't make bacon out of them because of how lien they are...
I prefer just stalking them rather then baiting. However, if baiting keeps them in an area, just makes the stalking much better

Re: Hogs!!!
wild hogs taste and eat so much better than demostic. Even if you just let demostic pigs go on large acrage and fend for them selfs thay eat better. Dang I need to book a hunt in California maybe we could get 4 hunters in my truck and make a trip of it theres room for 4 and gear and for all the meat we get too.

oregoncritters12,
you have REALLY been giving those pigs a hard time. good work! the spotted one looks like a particularly good eater.
here is a pic of another monster. this #1100 from Florida.

Re: Hogs!!!
I watched that one on the discovery channel. Not quite that big but he had been eating out of a fish hatchery of sorts i believe. HOGZILLA was the buzz for a while. I think i've killed 15 or so of them over the past five years... Great fun...

Re: Hogs!!!
I remember the Hogzilla craze too. Hogzilla was big.. but you are right: not as big as was originally claimed.
This one from Florida was a different piggie altogether.
I have been going to central and eastern Oregon looking for them.. only seen prints in a few places so far. Many congrads on your successful hunting!
p.s. something wrong with my phot host.. can't seem to put a pic of another pig from Australia up..

Re: Hogs!!!
I hunted hogs in Europe for several years. Took many of them somewhere in the neighborhood of 50. Mostly from stands in the snow at night. The interesting part is getting down to see if they are dead. Also on drive hunts. Took one in New Zealand last March. It was with dogs in thick cover at close range very interesting.
I have eaten many of the ones in Europe (true wildboar) they are great. The one in NZ they made dogfood out of him. He was a mix but mostly (wild).
Never hunted them in the states but would like to.

Re: Hogs!!!
OMG, please let them multiply for all of our sakes.
I too would be willing, as I said in another thread, to take a couple of guys (girls) with me in the motorhome either to California or anywhere here in Oregon to hunt hogs. I would love to use the bow, but can also use the rifle. We must find and kill some pork!

Re: Hogs!!!
I should hear from my buddy sometime today. I will have more info after that. In the past, it has been between 450.00 and 500.00 for TWO hogs lodging in an awesome cabin and a place to skin hogs and cooler + ice. This does not include meat processing, food, whatever else someone thinks they need... A licence in Cal is about 115.00 and they raised the pig tags from 11.00 bucks to like 50 now.

Re: Hogs!!!
From ODFW
Quote:
Feral swine are a non-native introduced
species in Oregon that have negative
impacts on native wildlife and habitats.
Feral swine are included in the Oregon
Invasive Species Council’s list of "100
Most Dangerous Invaders’’ to keep out of
Oregon. It is very important to the Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife and the
Oregon Department of Agriculture to
eliminate this non-native species before
they become established.
Feral swine are now defined as a
"predatory animal". It is legal to hunt feral
swine on public land with a hunting license. Hunting feral swine on private land
does not require a hunting license, but you
must gain landowner permission to be their
agent, and determine if any swine found
meet the definition of "feral swine" (see
definitions page 84).
Feral Swine” are animals of the genus
Sus which meet the following conditions:
(1) The animals are free roaming on
public or private lands and not being
held under domestic management
confinement; (2) No notification to the
land owner, manager, or occupant has
been made by the swine owner or their
representative of specifically identified
and described swine having escaped
domestic management confinement
within a radius of five miles during the
past five days; (3) The swine under
consideration do not appear to be
domesticated and are not tame; and (4)
The swine under consideration do not
meet the identification and description of
escaped swine in section (2) above.
restriction as to the number of participants.

Kill them all. I know there are some in Southern Oregon (Medford - Ashland area). I have hunted their "tunnels" and have a buddy who caught one in the open...dead pig. They are tough. 300mag sounded like he shot a brick wall. Be ready for a fun pack out .

Re: Hogs!!!
If it was a high fence hunt, you would not hear me talking about it or participating in it. I've taken alot of people down there with me and only a handful of them have taken hogs...Many have come back with an empty quiver and a bruised ego though..High fence isn't even an option...
