Default New youth hunts!

Take a look at the new snynopsis, there are new youth hunts slated for this year on the Westside of the state.

First, after the general season closes, all units will have a 2 day season for all unfilled tag holders 12-17, this will be for forked horns or better.

Second, some of the westside units are going to issue youth tags for spike or antlerless deer, the season will run from opening day until the close of the general season. It will not be valid during the two day extention.

I like the idea that the youth will be getting some better hunts, some of the current youth hunts suck. I'm sure some adults will take advantage of the 2 day extended season, but hopefully the good will overcome the bad.

My biggest concern though is the additional harvest of antlerless deer in the Northwest units. I hope ODF&W will offset this additional harvest by cutting the regular 600 series tags appropriately. Actually I would like to see the regular 600 series tags be eliminated, we just don't have a lot of deer any more.

P.S. both of this years fawns around the place are already severely infested with HLS and with the rainy cold weather, they are toast. HLS is still around and taking a toll, its just hard to see because of the lack of deer.

I like the idea. it should help recruite new younger hunters but with the data ODFW has been showing I don't see how the BT deer population can with stand more harvest.

I'm sure I'll get kicked in the sack for this but here goes. I would like to see spike/antlerless tags go to the youth and disabled hunters only. I love eating deer as much as anyone but if I don't get a deer I'm most certainly not going to starve. And lets be honest for the amount of meat you get from a deer compared to the cost to harvest the animal LOTS of beef or pork could be bought.

I won't kick you in the knards for that idea, in fact I have know of several sportsmen groups that purposed the same thing. Youth, seniors and disabled. The disabled actually have this option now in any unit that has a unit wide or significant antlerless hunt (please check the regs for the units), so youth and seniors would be nice.

Yep, I don't know how much more the local blacktails will take either, but it looks like we will soon find out.

Thanks for taking it easy south of the border . Your right about the youth and seniors they should be the ones who get to use these tags for antlerless deer along with the disabled hunters. I'm all for increasing the odds for a harvest for the ones who can't get out in the jungle like they used to or are new enough, "youth" to just turn loose in the woods.

I think expanding youth younting opportunity's is a great idea. I would prefer the antlerless tags go to youth and disabled also, unless the unit is way over the MO numbers. IMHO, most of saddle mountain is probably under reasonable MO numbers for deer.

I am in the agreement with you all regarding the youth hunts. I think cow tags and doe tags should be for kids up to 18 and people 60 and over and disabled. I am concerned about the amount of doe hunts in the Scappoose unit as I read it there will be 100 youth tag hunts right?? I think there should be no doe hunts for the next couple of years.

My nephew had the Cedar creek youth hunt and it was really bad while he did miss a 3 point and he took a bad shot in some brush I whacked him on the ear kids . We did not and the people we talked to did not see hardley any deer at all. NW Oregon is in a slump. I think the OFWD is trying to do the right thing but deer hunts er doe hunts up are going to be rarer to hunt and find...

My son had a early cow hunt in Scappoose unit and we walked about 30 miles in 3 days and saw 3 deer. We were hunting in a road closure areas and I admit I am going blind but that is pretty bad...

I LOVE the idea of youth/disabled hunts being the ONLY doe/cow hunts. Our Blacktails need a break!
I hope the ODFW is listening!!!
