Default Evinrude going out of business?

I was out fishing with a buddy that runs an Evinrude pump that he recently took in for servicing. The reps at Magnum Marine told him that Evinrude/Johnson has closed its doors. Can't get parts or service on them right now. I haven't heard much about it so I don't think it is being circulated yet. They might be purchased by somebody else but as of right now, nothing is in the works. That doesn't bode well for all of us who have one of their outboards on our boats. If you were thinking of buying one anytime soon, you might wait awhile or look at a Mercury. Anybody else heard about this?

I heard they went bankrupt, but I am not sure if its chapter 11 or chapter 7. I think chapter 11 allows a workout, but chapter 7 is liquidation mode. I may have them backwards. I would be interested in knowing for sure.

check out the Johnson/Evinrude web site. They have suspended all warranty work and parts sales - they are trying to find a buyer but as of right now, there is nobody. This even applies to new motors. bummer for us old Johnson owners....

I heard that all of OMC is bankrupt I tried to go to the johnson and the Evinrude web pages but could not access that realy sucks for the people that have new motors. but the people with old Johnson Evinrude motors should be able to find there parts at salvage yards for years to come. I herd that it was because of Honda Four.

Don't worry my fellow Mercury lovers god himself could not stop Mercury.

they went under because of the new ram ficht fuel injected engines, they are having major problems with them, i know a guy up here had 6 new powerheads put on, ive heard of problems with the mercury optimax too, now yamaha has the hdpi injected motors, who knows how they will do, yamaha is comming out with a 225 h.p. 4 stroke, ive seen some pics of it, supposed to be compairable weight to a 225 2 stroke

I want to see a 5 year old 200hp MERC ? That RUNS.
OMC did not go out of business because of bad motors.

They filled chapter 11 because they tried to corner the market in turn key boats. They overextended themselves to be on an even playing field with Brunswick Corp.Brunswick has 10X more money than OMC.Somebody got stupid at OMC.They will be back soon and sadly owned by a very successfull ofshore Company that could buy Brunswick with their chump change. This could be verrrrry intereesting.

I heard about this a few months ago from a source with an inside track. The reason given at that time was the major financial burden from the excessive warranty work on their injected motors as boater stated.

OMC was bought by Bombardier and Gen Mar Corp. They won't be taking on anything new. Bomb has the rights to the motors. Apparently omc was owing them something in the 200 million range, they bought the company right to say the least. Look to see parts availble in the next 3 months. The ficht engine was not the end all it was the boat companies and the way they hid the money. Yamaha introduced this tech last year and replaced all 175 and 200 powerheads last year. The optimax has been around for a while, since 1996, and has had some issues. Look for those to be resolved with the current model year. They now have combined tech with Motorola and Orbital. The reality is if you want an american made product you need a merc.
