Default OB pump

I have recently acquired a flat bottom sled with an older Merc 50 that has a bolt-on pump. I was wondering if anyone one out there would be willing to share with an avid fisherman but novice pump owner a schedule for the lube of the pump? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I believe the manufacturer recommends lubing it after every 10 hours of operation, but I've made a habit of giving mine a squirt of grease everytime I pull the boat out of the water. Seems to work fine; no problems after 14 years.

Gotta go with the flow on this one, I grease the pump bearing after everyr trip along with the trailer bearings. The manual for mine says to pump grease til' you quit seeing moisture come out of the return hose. One other thing, make sure you use the white grease, you will be able to tell if the bearing is starting to go south as the grease will start to turn a brownish color (burnt bearing). The last tip is from my mechanic!!!
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

I'm with Jeff on this one. Grease it till you get all the water out of the return hose or you get good grease out of the return hose. Thats how I do my 50 h.p.Yamaha and that is how most of the people I fish with do it. While your at it give your wheel bearings a shot to.

WT,

Pump the grease to it until the water is gone and 1 inch of grease comes out with no water. Grease it every time out of the water, plus the trailer bearings.

Good luck

wtbarrong,

I agree with what Mike T said about giving it a quick shot after every trip. We have had an outboard pump since 1970 and it has never failed and the routine was always grease it after the day was over.
