Re: Ford Or Chevy
We have a couple of GMC suburbans both purchased new, a 90 and 99. When we went for the 99 the trade-in value wasn't enough on the 90 to let it go. Now it's part of the family. Lots of memories are attached to that truck. Not to mention two kids learning to drive......
The 90 has over 226,000 miles and still runs strong. The 99 has about 78,000 miles.
The 90 is used to tow the boat and haul things around. The 99 is more like the family car.

I own both but the poll will only allow me one choice. I picked Chevy - mine has more miles on it (204k) than the Ford.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I have been buying a half ton pick-ups about every three years, 89,93,96, Ford, 98 Chev, 02Ford, 05Chev. The 98 Chevy was the best one but I think my next one will be a Toyota!

Had a Chevy for 10 years. Now a Ford Expedition. Seemed very strange at first. Well still does but I don't think I'll ever own a GM again unless I go Duramax.

I used to be a Toyota guy. Two herniated discs made me understand why so many people complain about the Toyota seats. Driving shouldn't be painful. My current ride is an F-150. I like it but I'm not a loyal Ford man yet.
I'll never own a Chrysler product.

Ford first, then the spot welded dodge, good motors, just need duct tape to keep the body together then the chevys, toyota, bad mileage for a small p/u but will run forever!

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I have a '96 Suburban which was pre-Expedition and anything else like it. Within a month, the coil died while I was on the freeway in So Cal going 65 mph in the left lane. I had to cross four lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder coasting without power. It's been down hill ever since and I only have 110,00 miles on it. SWMBO drives it but 8K miles a year. The rest are put on it during vacation trips.
Repaired or replaced:
- Catalitic converter ($1,200 but covered by warranty)
- Air conditioning compressor
- Coil (a second time)
- Power Steering pump and hoses
- Generator
- Intake manifold removed and new gaskets twice
- Exhaust gaskets
- Fuel pump (sits atop the gas tank so about $350)
- The interior components have been falling apart for years
- Electric door lock
Last time I had it into the dealer for about $3,000 worth of work, I ******* about all of the problems. The head mechanic was keen to point out that it had 100K miles on it and I should expect to have to replace things.
I asked him if he was buying a new car for $34K (the original price) and was told that he should expect to put about $10K into repairs over the first ten years, would he buy it?
I will never buy Chevy again. I don't like the tiny tires Ford uses ever since the Exploder problems with roll overs. I've had a couple of Durangos for company cars and they were without problem but they were both traded in by 55K miles so I don't have a long history. I see a Toyota in my future.
BTW, none of the trucks mentioned can handle 7,100 pounds in the bed. I suspect Mandinga was thinking pulling power but I don't know that for sure.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I was a Chevy man...last one I owned was a 1970 Chevy Impala SS 396, red with black racing stripes...wish I had it now.
Toyota just makes a darn good small rig...I can get through narrow mud roads.
If I need to tow more than a dog, I'd lean towards a Dodge, then Ford, then a Saab before a Chevy. GM needs a kick in the butt to make decent, dependable rigs again...still a Chevy man at heart.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I have had both and now drive a Dodge but I still consider myself a Chevy guy I just got a good deal on the Dodge 06 1ton quad cab diesel. Chevy does not make a 1 ton extra cab in a short bed or I probably would have bought one. The Ford 97 power stroke was the worst vehicle I ever owned too many problems. When I buy a new one I factor everything in and don't count any of them out they make new models every year and who knows who will come out with the next great idea?

Re: Ford Or Chevy
Every truck has pros and cons, every model has some bad apples. Sounds like Danno got one of those apples. We've got a 99 Suburban (96-99 are identical) and have had zero issues in 100k. Well, the mirror did fall off once.
I only drive a Dodge because of the and transmission (Cummins/manual). That's the reason I bought it. I wish you could purchase light duty trucks like you can semis, just pick the truck, pick your motor, and pick your tranny.
My next truck will likely be a Duramax/Allison GMC. I hate the ride from the straight axled trucks like Fords and Dodges, and I'm getting a little tired of shifting.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
My 96 Suburban had everything under the hood replaced except the starter by 120k miles. Oh and don't forget the intake manifold leaks for which they are famous for. Or is that infamous? They don't call Dexcool, death cool for nothing either. It's to bad they can't put a diesel in a Suburban. I know they used to but think it has something to do with the Allison trannie being to big.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I was a Chevy man true and solid for 30 years. Then the Cootessa and I saved for years to pay cash for a 94 S-10 Blazer. What a heap! The first two years it spent more time at the dealer's than in our garage. Nothing but trouble with the engine, brakes - especially the brakes, tranny, 4wd, and accessory motors. We replaced one window motor 3 times, 2 others twice. At around 70k miles we dumped it, and we will never own another GM product.
Contrast that with 2 Rangers totalling about 215,000 miles between 1986 and 2005 and I replaced one water pump and a clutch (Used it to teach my kids how to drive a stick.).

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I've owned 80,81,82,96, and 98 Chevy's in half-ton, 3/4 ton, and full 1-ton duallys.
I've owned a 78 and a 96 Toyota pickup.
And I've owned 99, 2001, 2004, and 2005 Fords in F-150's and a 7.3L PSD, and now a 6.0L PSD.
I was a Chevy guy until I got tired of wrenching on them. I used my trucks hard and asked a lot of them, and the GM products just weren't built for heavy duty work. They were a nicer ride than the Fords, but even the 1-tons with 454's and granny gears seemed to have problems hauling loads.
I switched to Fords and started buying diesels and love them. No problems yet while following the routine maintenance plans. The new duramax rigs look nice, but the Ford is going to have to start stranding me along side the road so that I can remember what it was like to own a chevy, before I go back to that.

Chevy... given the options. But a toyota is my choice. I own a '88 landcruiser. It is one sweet rig. It will tow my boat and drive down the smallest skidder trail and hall 5 people.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
Best vehicle on the road today is the 1998 Dodge Durango! If you can find one, BUY IT.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
Right now I own a Dodge with a Cummins diesel. Great truck.
Before that I had a '78 Dodge Power Wagon, Great truck. Put over 260K
miles on the original motor. Hard miles I might add. 4 wheelin and towin too. somtimes both at the same time.
I've also owned Fords. I think both Dodges were better trucks.
This is what I'm thinking of for my next truck. Ford F650 with a 300 Cat Diesel.

Re: Ford Or Chevy
I have had all 3 major brand of American trucks, a 97 dodge an 02 chevy and a 95 ford and to tell you the truth my favorite truck to date is my 69 ford it started out as a project and has gotten to e my daily driver. I think it is because it is very heavy duty and not everyone else has one.
