Default Another good day on the Sandy

Had a good day today on the Sandy. Had 4 strikes. One I had on for a good minute or so til the hook pulled free. Another was just a headshake or two. The other two I landed. One was about an 11 lb. hatchery which I kept.

The highlight of the trip though, was the biggest Steelhead I've ever landed. It was a huge native buck. A quick tape in the water measured over 35" long! My estimate was 17-18 lbs. Another helpful fisherman that helped me gently land it guessed it to be about 20 lbs. I don't think it was quite that big though. I landed this fish on my 9'6" Loomis 1141 spinning rod with 8 lb. line. My arm still aches! It sure felt great to watch that big strong fish swim away back into the depths. All action was on yarn and sand shrimp fished under Thill floats.

I had a great afternoon fishing the Sandy today. Key word is fishing. I was in the canyon below Marmot. Beautiful. Out of the wind. Pressure was extremely light. I was surprised at all the sand in the canyon. (Guess that is why it is called the Sandy River). I was wondering, will steelhead hold in that? I worked all the deeper slots and tailouts - flyfishing.

I did get my first fish of the year. About a 15" sucker. Wild. I released it. Took my glo bug after I just juiced it with scent. I have no fly-fishing principles ....

Great Fish BT- my dad and I found a bruiser today too!!!!!!!Nav- I have always heard that steelhead will for the most part not hang out on sandy bottoms as the sand irritates thier gills.~John

Yes, what RT said......In the holding pond at the Hatchery. Damn those fish can really tear it up when there in those little concrete pens.

Actually, I was fishing above Dodge.

How long did it take to achieve the four strikes?

Nice pocket water above Dodge. Great area in the past for site fishing Springers.

I got a late start - probably wasn't fishing til about 10:30am. Quit around 3:00pm, so fished about 4 1/2 hours.

Fish Mag -- So, much to learn. I did fish deeper water, current seams, breaks. But the bottom substrate was sand - deep sand. Next time I will look in the swifter slots and try to find where the sand has not accumulated. Thanks.
