Re: armageddon
Ask Shirley MacLaine.
It May have already happened...
The sixth angel poured his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up in order to prepare the way for the kings from the east. And I saw three foul spirits like frogs coming from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet. These are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. (See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed, not going about naked and exposed to shame.) And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Harmagedon.
Resurrection of the Dead. Based on Revelation 20:4-6. Stained glass, Sainte-Chapelle, Paris, ca. 1200
This passage is ambiguous whether any event actually takes place here, or whether the gathering of armies is only to be seen as a sign.
In fact, a gathering of the Roman army occurred at this place as a staging ground for one of their assaults on Jerusalem in AD 67. This is consistent with the preterist interpretation that seventh bowl of wrath[4] refers to events culminating in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. However, one indication that the book predicts a future event is the mention of an army from the east of 200 million, a number that would not have been possible in any battle of that period.
Another interpretation is that the sudden death of Josiah, a religious reformer in his early 30s who showed great promise of renewing a theocratic Jewish state, resulted in myths of his triumphant return. Josiah is said to have died at the hands of the Egyptian pharoah Necho II just as the Davidic monarchy was in ascendancy after a period of disarray and corruption. His death precipitated the decline of a strongly monotheistic faction in Judea in the years prior to the Babylonian captivity. The idea that a Davidic king would return someday to fight and win at Megiddo is an example of the myth of eternal return.
Megiddo is mentioned various times in the Old Testament. The Book of Kings and Chronicles describe a battle that took place there in 609 BC. This resulted in the death of Josiah, a young and charismatic ruler whose quick and untimely death precipitated the decline of the dynasty of David and may have inspired stories of the return of a Messiah from this lineage. The valley is marked by the presence of the archaeological mound or tell, representing the accumulated ruins of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements that flourished between 5,000 years ago and 650 BC. Some would argue that the word "Armageddon" is an early example of a mondegreen

Re: armageddon
No one missed the flood in Noah's day! Trust me you won't have to wonder if it has happened yet.
It is the pinnacle of several well outlined events. Most of them have and/or are occuring now.
Of the only two real influences in this universe (God and Satan) which one do you think would want you to believe "It will never happen in my lifetime!"

Re: armageddon
I don't know anything about the Mayans or Shirley Maclain but the Christian belief explained in the Bible doesn't give an exact time of the final apocalyptic battle. Although scripture reveals certain conditions will deteriorate as the end of the age draws near we can't confuse these with the specific final period prophesied.
We do know that many cataclysmic events will occur before God directly intervenes in human affairs. These will result in the end of the age and the return of Christ. The book of Revelations explains this along with the Tribulation and the Millennium.
Jesus' disciples asked Him about the end times which were prophesied repeatedly in the Old Testament. The book of Matthew, Chapter 24 gives His response:
Chapter 24
1
And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
3
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8
All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10
And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand
16
Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17
Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18
Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19
And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
23
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
24
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25
Behold, I have told you before.
26
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
27
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28
For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
29
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
32
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
36
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
37
But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40
Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41
Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45
Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47
Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49
And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50
The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51
And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
If we are prepared spiritually this is not a time of fear but of hope and joy. It will lead to God's incomparable Kingdom.

Re: armageddon
It will happen as soon we have tipped the balance of demand to resources to the point of no return. Some preach a life of expansion and growth which will ultimately lead to a collapse. Look no further than the mirror.

The Mayan just need to get a filler pack for their dayplanner and the they will be good to go for another 5,000 years. I think Office Depot has the filler packs on the same aisle as the human sacrifice and mummification kits.

Re: armageddon
<me neither>.
Reality: No one knows the time, date or even how the end will come folks. God has to laugh at us and our silliness by trying to figure these things out to which we have not a clue nor real understanding. We try to intreprete the meaning and writings of Revelations only to find ourselves with more questions than answers.
Just know this. Be ready! Ain't nothing to be scared of if your life is in order with God.
Far as the Movie with Bruce and Ben. It could happen again. Has happened many times before but not on the scale that this movie is about.
Peace.

Re: Armageddon
Oh, I think that we are heading for some sort of collapse.
Food, power or bacterial/viral outbreak. The latter most likely. The threat of nuclear war, though waning, is still present.
These potential future events have nothing to do with any book written by our ancestors or any movie made today or any re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-reinterpretation of ideals, theologies blah blah blah.
___
I predict that in the year 2445, the Lunatics, having been sanctioned by the The United World Order (Terra) in 2444 for retracting the solar shield array protecting Earth, will detonate a small Dark Energy bomb on the Moon thus destabilizing its orbit and causing all life to be extinguished on the Earth.
The Lunatics will move in with the Martians who have long severed ties with the Earth. Together they will proceed with the Genesis project and move the planet Venus further from Sol in an attempt to terraform it to suit human expansion to that planet.
Lets see if I'm correct.

Re: armageddon
A little off topic, but in his book "Hegemony or Surviva" Noam Chomsky talks about a scientist who discusses how species that were an accident, or that dont belong in existence tend to work themselves out in a given amount of time. He then continues to say that humans are well ahead of the curve by removing ourselves from existence. Pretty interesting read. Reallly heavy, but interesting.

Re: armageddon
My employer currently has my work load 30% above the recommended level. I got to fish exactly once in 2006. I would say those are signs of impending doom!

Re: armageddon
In christian realms, folks have been predicting THE END since the first century AD.
Since it's truly unknown - and I'm skeptical of the intrepretations of the Mayan calendar - I think it's more important to behave like this world that sustains us will be around for some hundred-more generations and thus act accordingly.

What me worry?
The world might be a better place without us, I see more evidence every day. Like we are so important or is it just you!

Re: armageddon
Um...Y2K came and went...
Tell you what:
All you guys who believe in The Rapture and The End of Days and all that other bugaboo, load up your trucks with all your earthly possessions and bring them to me. I'll gladly help you alleviate your materialism, thereby redeeming at least one of your Seven Deadly Sins. Anyone with a newer Yamaha T-8 or a Lowrance color display GPS/FF will be allowed to skip ahead of the line and secure thier seat next to Elvis at that big bingo hall in heaven. A late model SeaSwirl Striper, fully loaded, will guarantee you a blessed good luck handkercheif and a vial of miracle water along with free tennis lessons from the big "JC" himself.
The "End o' da Wirld" has been predicted every year, any day, since the first caveman figured out how to pass a collection plate.

Re: armageddon
Quoted from: http://www.december212012.com/articl...t_mayans.shtml
Dr. Vern Scarborough is a Mayanist and professor of anthropology at the University of Cincinnati. He also warns not to read too much in the doomsday prophecy of the Long Count Calendar. “This was a society governed by rules that were very different than ours,” he said. “I think you have to be very careful when you drum up support for the end of the world just because the Maya say so.”
Scarborough said that the astronomy predictions made many years ago were often used in what today would be termed “playing politics.” Only a select group of Mayan elders studied the sky, enough to predict certain events like eclipses and the movements of planets. If an elder said an eclipse would happen and he was correct, he would then use that to his advantage when pushing for additional powers or longevity. “If things didn’t happen the way they predicted, they made them happen,” Scarborough said. “When you begin predicting eclipses, that’s a pretty heavy-duty statement. You then indicate that you are responsible for shutting out the sun. It’s a power play.”
One problem with studying the Mayan writings is many people fail to place them in the context of the time. The Maya had no way of knowing certain events like modern scholars can.

Re: armageddon
I'm ready for it.
If I had the choice of being on earth when the end came, I would choose to be here.....and see the end, and how it all goes down.

When I first read the topic of this thread I thought it said " armchairgettin' "
I think I'll just follow the words of Yogi Berra, "it ain't over till its' over".
Guess I'm feeling old today.

Re: armageddon
Several months ago, the pastor of a small church in Salem claimed to have dreams related to Armageddon. He said there would be an enormous earthquake off of the Oregon Coast which would cause a large tsunami to go up the Columbia River and wipe out Portland. Of course a tsunami traveling that far up the Columbia River is a geological impossibility, but that's besides the point. In addition, Salem would be turned to rubble, which would then start to burn. Al Queda terrorists, including Osama Bin Laden, would then emerge from the burning rubble and begin shooting the survivors with machine guns. Apparently this was all triggered by a gay pride parade in PDX. He advised Bible believing, sabbath keeping Christians to flee the coming wrath of God. He gave a very precise date and time for all this, based on several numerological factors in his dream.
My wife's family belongs to a denomination quite similar to that of the pastor behind the chain of e-mails. My sister-in-law received the e-mail, along with most of the congregation, and thought we should know as well. Even though we are not sabbatarians, in fact we are Catholic, they thought we were probably good Christians regardless, and would want to know. They were planning on leaving Salem that weekend, heading for a high spot to wait out the coming destruction of the Willamette Valley.
So I had a discussion with dear sister-in-law, and showed her a map of the Columbia River, and that a tsunami couldn't go that far up the river because of the multiple bends in the river. She hemmed and hawed. Well, it's a nice weekend anyay, and they hadn't been out of town for a while, so they would go to the mountains just to enjoy themselves, and not because of some dream a guy had.... Did we want to come too?
I had to point out to her, that in the event this dream did come true, our buddy Osama has a ten million dollar bounty on his head, and I have a rifle with a thousand rounds of ammo ready to take on the terrorists. I certainly wouldn't want to pass up that kind of money if in fact Osama appeared out of the smoking ruins of Salem!
Alas, Salem and PDX still stand, and I don't have my ten million for smoking Osama. I really could have used the money too!
