Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Alright- here's the deal, I have a 35' x 14' pole barn on my property in Beverly Beach. The door is 12' high and I need to raise it to 14' to get the boat in. Anyone know a good place to go for Overhead Door work? I can't find anyone in Newport.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike
Call Bill at Rowley's Towing, aka The Storage Place, in Newport. He'll know, his place has lots of overhead doors. He's a good guy too, and a fisherman!

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Mike -- What you might end up having to do is install a sliding door. Most overhead doors require an additional 14" or more for clearance ie a 12' OHD would require a 13' 4" minimum clearance for the track and flagging and even more if you need an operator. I just installed 2 12'x12' OHD into my shop with a 14' eave and did'nt have more than a few inches to spare. They do make custom sized doors and have low clearance track options but you need to find out the minimum it will take to get the boat in and then you can see what your options will be. PM me if you need any help I have a family member that owns an OHD company Good luck

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Ok I have to ask? Did you have it built too small? Or just acquired this building? Anyway like has been said you will need the height to be more for the door. Good luck and make sure your door is all the way up or you will be buying extra antennas. Yea yea that bit of wisdom is from experience!

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
I purchased a beach house with the pole barn this summer. I knew the door was too small, but haven't had a chance until now to deal with it until now.
I really only need to raise it 18" to get the boat in with the radar, but the panels come in 2' increments.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Hey Mike what is your clearance that you have to have? The panels for commercial doors can be ordered in custom sizes just for situations like this and with a low profile track it might work for you. A good OHD installer can find out the brand and have a panel made to match the existing door if its all in decent condition.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Thanks ReadyPro1-
I found a guy that is looking at it tomorrow. He is going to figure out what the door is, and work with me to get it up as high as we can. I will have to modify the first truss in the PB, but it shouldn't be that big of a problem.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Mike,
Because of our sometimes restrictive CC&R's in the housing division I call home, I could only build my shop so high. To get the highest possible door clearance on the RV side, the garage door company had to custom order one of the panels. It ended up being about 3 inches smaller (shorter) than the standard factory panels. The door itself won't probably be any problem, it will be the header that may cause you some headaches.
My garage doors were custom ordered and installed by Garage Door Sales of Lincoln City on East Devils Lake Road across from the outlet mall. They are in the phone book or I can PM you. They were very easy to work with and may be worth the call to have them come inspect and give you an estimate.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Mike- I'm not clear on the detail of your existing door but if you can fit it a roll up might be a solution.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Mike...Doug leases a building to the Overhead Door Company on Hwy 30 out by his office...good guys if you want a name and number, call Doug.
Could you dig out the gravel enough to get under the header?

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
You have probably already considered this and I know they are a hassle and something that you constantly have to remind yourself to flip down but what about changing your radar mount to a hinged model so you could flip it down when storing your boat. Would probably be a lot cheaper and easier. Just an idea. Wish I had your problem ie nice pole barn and boat still to big to get it

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Nalu is it possible to use a solid door on a track? The winter storage site for 'Kismet' has a shop with the door on a track that rolls to one side vs rolling up.
This overcomes the overhead clearance problem.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Nalu
If you need a little extra room up top order a glue lam for your header, they are not that expensive. I am a contractor, and I can usually get overhead door panels in many different sizes and heights to make whatever door height I want without a problem. 16", 19" 21", 24" door panels shouldn't have to restrict you.
If you need you could put in a whole new door for $1000.00 or less installed. If you haven't found one yet send me a PM and I will give you my phone number. I will hook you up with my door company. They will go wherever you want.
Roll-up doors are not only very expensive, they usually take more room than an overhead. With a low headroom track you can get within inches. Standard you need around 12-13 inches I think.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Thanks for the input guys. The guy from Lincoln City was came out to look, but thought the door was locked and didn't open up to look inside.
I should have enough room to add a 24" panel and raise the header and modify one truss. There is very little weight on the truss, so adding ties to it shouldn't effect the sturctural side any at all.
I thought about the flip down arch, but the door still needs to be raised as the hard top and rocket launchers still are higher than the door currently.
I most likely will have to make a little kick out in in the back to fit the engines. Right now with the engines down it is a question if I could roll the door all the way down without hitting the tip of the tongue. I have exactly 35' from door to back of pole barn, and as I have measured it, I have exactly 35' from tip of tongue to back of cavitation plates! No CCR's and plenty of space, so if I make a 2 foot kicker in the back for the engines I should be fine.
John- I think the door I have is my only option.
Here's what the shop looks like....

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
The shop with the side sliding door is 40 by 60 so it works there.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Nice looking boat shed.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
Just a thought, a folding tounge on the trailer may be easier than a bump out in the back of the shed

It's a good thought Roy, but so far I haven't been able to find online anything that shows how this is. Think there is any worries about a swing-away hitch for a 10k lb. load trailer?

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
That is what I was told is that for that size boat and trailer it is not a good idea for a folding tongue trailer.

Re: Salty Dog Boat Storage Help?
I have a simular problem, although my shop is stick framed, 36' x 50' with 14' eves, So i will not be trying to raise the header for sure, but I put in a 12 x 12 door, and an 7 x 16, origainally intending to use it for a motorhome and smaller boat, now have the 26' striper, the boat just fits under the door, but I am going to want a RADAR unit soon.
Laguna, you mentioned something about the Hinged mount for radar, do you, or anyone else, have any experience with it, brand ? sounds like that could be the way to go ?
