Guitar tech
I need two guitars set up (accoustics)
Ones a low end epiphone, the other is a far more valuable Martin.
Need a skilled tech I can trust, and not charge me based on the value of a guitar thinking Ive got money to burn.
Portland or Seattle area.

Re: Guitar tech
In Salem you could call Terry Schneider, "The Music Guy" in the phone book. He's been playing the guitar nearly 40 years and does set up/repairs.

Re: Guitar tech
I've always taken mine to apple music in downtown Portland, he has worked on my breedlove and taylor....does an awesome job everytime....when I had the breedlove in....he did some "extra" tuning of the action for me...and made that thing glide!

Re: Guitar tech
In Portland, take the Martin to Jim Prior, who has a repair business that shares a space with Pioneer Music co, which is the premier fine acoustic instrument shop in the state (No contact information please). They are an authorized Martin repair shop, down town. Jim is often booked a couple of weeks in advance, but he has done right by my 1980 HD-28 several times.
The 12th Fret on belmont also does pretty good work, although I get weirder vibes in that store.
What are you having done? Just some simple stuff or something big like a neck reset?

Re: Guitar tech
Try the 12th fret Luthier. Take them to an actual Luthier - NOT a guitar "technician" - been bit by that dog before.

Re: Guitar tech
Thanks for the tips.
Riverkeeper. Not sure of the extent of the work needed. Both guitars have been in unheated storage for a year. the epiphone needs strings, a tuner replaced (Gold grover, slips) and a remedy for fret buzz that wasnt there when I baught it. The martin needs the nut replaced or shimmed, strings and a minor fret buzz remedy that may be solved with the nut replacement, or the result of a bigger problem like neck twist. Neither of them "feel" right after storage. I have pick-up questions too for the martin (B-Band xom dual sitting here doing nothing, need it installed) I want to start recording and dubbing/editing via my pc...cant afford a good mic setup and a studio environment to do that but Im set up with software and input for the PC already. Ive also got a martin thinline pickup, but really dont know if I want a hole drilled in the guitar. But it could go in the epiphone.

Re: Guitar tech
Seriously...take it to Jim Prior. He'll tell you everything it needs.

Re: Guitar tech
I haven't taken my guitars into any shops since moving to Oregon, but I do agree with the idea of taking it to a luthier instead of a guitar tech. From my experience most "techs" are usually guys who have been playing for a long time and have picked up a bit of knowledge about guitar repair. A luthier, on the other hand, has spent most of their time building and repairing guitars.
