Default Big trout

Does anyone have any info or ideas about fishing for lakers or big german browns in some of the high lakes. I'm thinking of hitting them at ice-out and trying to catch some of those monster trout I see pictures of. I'm guessing Odell or Crescent Lake for the lakers and Wickiup (?) or Paulina for the browns. Anyone have any ideas? Deep trolling with down-riggers? Jigging off bottom? Best times? Good holes? If you have any info, opinions or success stories to share please do. Thanks!

If you are ever at Wickiup stop by South Twin Resort and look at the pictures of the big fish on the wall. They post pictures of the biggest fish each year from the lake. I didnt make it over last year, but the year before the picture of the biggest brown was 26 pounds and change from Wickiup. Of course the story on the picture said 2 pound leader was used.

That is one nice sized brown, but if it was landed on 2 pound leader it either took 2 days, or the fish had absolutley no fight it.

TANNER!!!!!
Dont tell people about Miller lake!
Well now that the secret is out. Troll rapalas in the shallows on the east end of the lake. Rainbow trout pattern seems to be the best. This year you should be able to drive in. Most years you need a snow mobile to get in when the ice melts.
The road to Miller is just north of Chemult(SP) on the west side of Hwy 97.

birdhunter,
Try large rapalas, 5-7", around the dam. Go early, first light and troll with no weight about 100' back.
Good Luck,
KRM

I wouldn't worry too much about people flocking to Miller. As beautiful as it is, it's a long dusty road up and it seems like half of it is washboard. I used to bring along the fly pole for the times when the muley hunting was slow. There is a large shallow shoal area at the NW corner of the lake. You can wade TONS of water here with chest waders. Caught some nice browns at dusk on matukas and woolly buggers on a floating line. If I remember right, there was quite a few people shrooming around hunting season up here (shittake's?) Bring your bucket and pack heat. I hear the mushroomers get kind of territorial... Joe

BirdHunter,
A good place to go for big Browns is a place called Miller Lake. Odell and Crescent are the Go To spots for the Mackinaw. Miller lake is directly south of Crescent. I think you can access it by Highway 97. Miller is a real sleeper that holds some very large browns. The book "Fishing In Oregon" by Madeline Dinesse lists all kinds of lakes by region and it tells you what is in them, the best times to fish them and how to get there.

Fishing for Macs at ice out should be good and you don't have to fish as deep as you do later on in the season.
