Ipod help
Since I am over 35 years old, I don't know how to put music on this new Ipod thing that Santa left. I think I saw a gift card at Costco for downloading "I-Tunes" or something; do I need this? Or are there safe, free sites to download from? Is it true that I can only add songs to it from one computer (in other words, could I take songs off the kids' computer that they have already downloaded, and then move to my computer and download more music to it)? Can I take songs off of CD's that I own and somehow magically put them on this little thing? Or, should I just hire a 12 year old?

Re: Ipod help
12 year old. Every time.
My Daughter (11) (who wants an ipod) says it is easy to "rip" your cd's to the ipod using a computer. She and her girlfriends do it all the time with their units I guess. And I guess downloading from the net for free "legally" is a piece of cake as well.

Re: Ipod help
install the software (ITunes I think it is). It will allow you to manage any music you already have, and rip music from current cd's you have.

Re: Ipod help
iTunes is free and a CD should have come with the iPod. If not, just go to apple.com and then to the iPod or iTunes site. It is the only portal to your iPod from your PC.
You will be able to download music from iTunes or load the music on your computer from CD's, your network, or other storage media. iTunes will put that on you iPod. You will have to use iTunes to find anything that doesn't come from iTunes downloads but that's just like finding data files.
You have to establish one PC as your iTunes home site. While you can get music from other PC's, you'll never be able to manipulate it much unless you use some storage media (CD or memory card/stick) to load it on to your computer. You'll be able to play the music you get via the iPod from someone else's computer but you won't be able to store it on your PC. Use normal file transfers for that.
That all being said, I am no iPod expert so my comments might be slightly off (but not too far off). The key is to pick a PC that you want to be your primary PC for the iPod, get iTunes installed and get it up and running. You can learn the rest at your own speed from there.
We now have four iPods. I love my nano! I just wish the boat had a stereo with an iPod port.

You can get an adapter at Fry's that will plug into a cigarette lighter and play your ipod on the boat / car stereo. You pick a "blank" (static) frequency on your fm tuner, and the adapter sends an FM signal from your ipod to the stereo. I think I paid about $70 for the one in my girlfriend's kid's car.

Re: Ipod help
Any idea what sites have free music downloads without opening up my computer to hackers?

Re: Ipod help
I really don't think that there is "free" music unless you find some trial offers.

Re: Ipod help
Most free music downloads are something to stay away from, unless you like downloading those cool Trojans. 15 dollar gift cards are pretty standard, scratch off the gooey junk on the back to get your code. You can also rip CD's and add them to your library and then pick all the cool ones you want in your Ipod. Play around with it a bit, it's simple. You will need to download Itunes to do all this. Stay away from the free downloads unless it comes from a trusted site.

If your boat stereo does not have a mp3 input but does have a external CD changer plug, you can find adapters on eBay that use that plug with a small black box and adapter that the iPod plugs directly into (about $100). It charges the iPod and plays the iPod directly through the stereo input. The FM transmitters don't provide nearly as good sound. I have one for my car. I never had any luck with the FM transmitters but maybe it was just the two brands that I tried.

Re: Ipod help
Plus if your boat stereo is a cassette deck , you can get an adaptor for less than $20.

Re: Ipod help
anyone with a video ipod ever hooked it up to the TV and got it to work? I would like to play a slideshow from my ipod to the TV. What about playing a movie from the ipod to the TV? How bout a projector without hooking up a laptop?
Can it be done?

Re: Ipod help
You can hook it up to a TV, but if you use a cable other then the IPOD cable, the leadouts are different. MP4 videos actually look pretty good on a TV.
