Default Sharpen Your Hooks!

All signs are pointing to the Feds agreement to the 15% impact on Upriver and Snake River spring chinook. That means the non-treaty sports and commercials will get the 2% the states wanted. Expect to fish up until the first or second week in March catch and kill and then 3-4 days a week marked fish only most likely through April unless the Willamette ESA impacts are reached. Sharpen them hooks and secure your bait looks like around 15-16k to be caught!

WHEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! This has been a long time coming. I used to fish around Longview/Rainier 20 or so days a year between Sturgeon and Springers (quite a bit when you consider I lived East of Eugene at the time). I've always loved it down there--even when I didn't catch fish. This is gonna be fun!!!!!!

Wow, biggest predicted run in history...
and us sportfishermen get a whopping 1%!!!

How much revenue will the state get from the 1% alloted to commercial fisheries compared to the revenue the sportfishermen bring in with the same 1% ???

Gone fishin,

That 1% is only for ESA listed fish, which are not the largest in history. The hatchery fish are. Lets not put a downward spin on this, it is a good thing. The states asked for a number that would give very good fishing opportunities for all user groups and got it. This years sport catch should be the highest on record (9500 in 1990) and by far the largest since ESA listings. Please keep in mind that not only does the Upper Columbia and Snake River ESA listed fish determine the catch, so does the Upper Willamette wild impacts. Kind of a double whammy. With this number of hatchery fish returning, 1% goes a long, long ways.

note: Corrected the harvest estimate since I couldn't read my own writing.

You know, that's great that it's a good thing. I don't fish in that fishery myself, I fish springers here on the coast. My point is the state needs to realize the impact in terms of the allmighty dollar on sportfisheries compared to those of the commercial allotment. Why not divy up the fish accordingly...That extra 1% could go a long way in our states economy, maybe even keep a couple hatchery sites from closing.
The sprotfishermen always seem to take it in the shorts.

And no, I don't need any cheese with this whine!

I have a couple of questions, when does this fishery start to see fish in decent numbers and do you use the same methods as you do for the upriver brights??
