interviewing for elk hunting camp
since cwh is moving to alaska i'm in need of a new elk hunter with time and endurace to hunt on foot for elk. my normal schedule is to set up the wall tent camp three days before opening day, hunt every day of season, then break camp the day after season closes. for cascade elk that is 11 days, for eastern oregon draw tags it can be longer.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Do you give extra points for a person providing 4 wheelers?

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
yes, 1- 4wheeler equals negative 50 points 1 rokon = 20 negative points, 1 mule equals 1 point as long as i do not have to feed or haul it, 4 goats = 2 points, bring your own packframe = 10 points

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Good luck on your search! A good hunting partner is not an easy thing find. I would say the bonus points would go to the person with access to the most private acreage.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I'll put in a recommendation. Baltz is a good guy, fun to hunt with, and a great camp cook. I'm thinking of ways to get back to OR to elk hunt. It's been good teaming up to chase Elk these last couple years.
Now, I've said before, and some of you picked up on this on your own, but he might be a little bit opinionated But that keeps the campfire conversation interesting.
Good luck Baltz, hopefully you find someone that does more than their share of the camp work, you've earned that for sure!

I remember a day when you invited a current members son to fill an MT slot. Are we not passing down our hunting herritage? No worrys, I cant get any of my sons to leave the Playstation III alone long enough to go hunting either.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
my dentist's sons are on my hunting camp list. if they want to go. they have been boyscouts since they where old enough, so their basic survival skills are well taught and better than most hunters with years of hunting behind them.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Baltz if you pick up the bow your always welcome to drop in and hunt with us..I like your opnions some times and who doesn't have opnions. I am sure that you hunt hard and I know that you do your research. Good luck, now I have a question if the person used to own a 4 wheeler what is the point reduction or do they get bonus points for giving up a bad habit..

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I'm out of the running on this one ehunter.
I had a mule for 15 years. -5 points
Have taken a bull all but one year since 72. Plus 20 points
Hunted the coast range since 72 all but one year. Minus 30 points
Thinking about getting a string of pack goats. Minus 10 points
All seriousness aside I think we'd all hunt well together. Problem is most of us have a regular set of hunting partners. Or we love to hunt alone. Or we fear change.
I think I'll keep a hunting camp with my folks till they say they'd rather stay home.
This is a great premise for a hunting article though.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
when it comes to elk hunting, going solo in some areas i hunt is not a smart decision. not that i'll stop if everyone has gone home for the season and my tag is still valid.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Too bad I'm on the wrong side of the big creek. Not sure about the whole goat thing- ever since I came home and found one of mine standing on the roof of my Corvette I've had sort of a "thing" about them.
Have to agree with you on the scoring system except I think you're being a bit lenient with the atv owners.
Merry Christmas,
AW

Hey now, I resemble that remark.
(stands up)
Hi, My name is Mike and im a fanatic obsessive compulsive elk BOW hunter. I get 202 days off a year and spend about half of them in the field or on the river/ocean. Ive been bow hunting now for 2 years and already own 3 bows and 4 different dozens of arrows, chainsaw winch, elk cart, laser range finder, GPS, trail tape, 2 different bottles of elk pee, 5 different buggles, 3 cow calls, pack boards, and a Toyota elk assualt vehicle. I glued felt to the bottom of my boots for stealth. I leave the house on days that I work to arrive where I want to hunt with 5 minutes of daylight left. All well worth it.
I was once a simple elk rifle hunter... my 30-06 and a magazine full of shells was all I needed because I never left sight of my truck. I bagged two elk using the hood of my truck for a bipod. But the crowd and the constant gunfire made me hesitate to take to the woods. It is nothing to see 50 people opening morning of elk hunting season where I hunted. Honestly I was scared into becomming a bow hunter, and I doubt I will ever turn back.
Have you talked to your kids about quads?.... just say "no" to quads

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I will be down there as well. I will be in Denver on Mon/Tues/Wed setting up Camp Thursday the 18th and flying to Spokane for the opener. I should be back to hunt Monday to Friday. My Dad, Grandpa and friends would love to have you over if I am not there.
Give Me a PM if you are going alone. Elk hunting is not just about killing, but spending quality time with quality people. I am not one of the quality people, but my Dad and Grandpa are the greatest two guy's that you will ever meet. I have three guy's that hunt very hard, and a couple who are simply down to relax and have some fun. We will have plenty cold adult beverages and if that is not your style, drop by and have some coffee or a steak or two.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
we will be in our normal camp at the end of the road, with three hunters going out the back door each day. last year i did not get the camp, so i built another, 1/2 mile from the trailhead. then cut a new trail up the hogback past the end of road camp. the large group in the end of road camp last year, hunted 1 half day out of camp then road hunted the next 4 days, then left. every day i hiked past their camp on the ridge above them as they slept or where just getting up each morning. my question is, why camp at a trailhead blocking all the parking, then never hunting out of camp?

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Frustrating looking for a hunting partner ,I've had a few that didn't like me after the first day and decided it was better to "road hunt" never have understood that concept I guess you can find a suicidal bull every now and then.
I have taken the grow my own approach (hunting partner) ,It's working out alot better .

I agree that most here would hunt well together.
Since I wasn't raised in the PNW and have no-hunting relatives (anywhere) for the most part I've hunted alone, not by choice but by the reasons you mention. I'd love to set get out and hunt with others and am not affraid to do my share getting the job done. My wife hunted with me in the first couple years but we have two little ones under two now so I am hunting solo until they are old enough to join.
If you're interested in teaming up for deer/elk/bear/cougar in the NW coastal range, please let me know.

I will try, but if it is gone, I will have to go elsewhere. Two years ago, there was a camp in your spot. They did the same thing you mentioned. Lazy
The good thing was they would never make it far from camp.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I thought Blatz had his elk camp all figured out? I'm kinda sorta interested in that as a prospect.
I'm home from my commercial fishing work so early this time I have the option to go on the cascade hunt or.... the coastal hunt if the weather is going to be real hot and dry during the cascade hunt.
My idea has been to hunt a region closer to Estacade than detroit lake. Not a lot of bulls but... I like the sheds I've started to find. My go to location is closer to Detroit Lake and has more elk and elk hunters.
I could also be a go to hunter. If you find someone who can only make the first 3 days of the season. I could join in if I haven't shot a bull in areas i plan to hunt. I'm open to any of the above.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Blatz PM sent though I imagine your involved in the deer season.
I think there is a key problem with my working out for the Blatz elk camp team. The problem is I am gone from home so much each year for work reasons that after taking my elk I am used to heading home. (Exception to that is when I hunt the coastal 4 day season. That hunt is over so fast and the camp time doubles as family time.)

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I have this point of view for what I hunt ( except for yotes ), MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. I only put in for one unit and if no tag, well I spend that time fishing. I am only talking about deer hunting as I don't elk hunt any more.
Birds of a feather flock together and that what makes for a good hunt.

very true. i hunt cascade elk, then apply for the big hunt. the big hunt is where the other hunter is mainly needed. i have no problem getting others involved in the general tag hunt

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
so Baltz, you have a specific hunt in mind I'm sure. would you consider posting your plans regarding unit, dates, etc. I'm not necessarily applyin, and I wasted all my points to hunt the E. Northside for 1 day this season, and I gotta go to WY for 1/2 of Oct, but I'd like to hear what you got planned. Thanks, Tom.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
I think I am missing something about this thread...
Are you just seeking a new hunting partner for elk since your friend moved to Alaska - or - is your elk camp spectacular and the hunting is so great that there is room for more.
From personal experience, it's better to hook up with someone who has a similar hunting style and goals (and you can handle being around for a week solid) than just drawing from a random list.
I am just curious as to what your goal is.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
i'm looking for a hunter with the time and money to share a hunt. i'll set aside 21 days for the hunt, scouting, pre hunt camp set up and hunt days. i have the camp, time and money to do it. plus all the gear to get it done. my goal is to go hunting with good company in very remote country where a guy by himself should not do it alone. ice covered boulder fields, mountain tops and such can be dangerous

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
Good luck Baltz. That could be a tall order.
You know as well as I do that once you set a certain standard for you own hunting style, its hard to match. I know lots of people, but only a couple I would consider hunting with. The other downfall too, is sharing your hunting spot. Too many times once you part ways with a hunting partner, they will return to your spot with a friend and claim it as their own.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Re: interviewing for elk hunting camp
i'll hunt this tag, then share all the scouting info, with another hunter. then move on to new country. with one exception, an area that was shared by another ifisher that requested i keep it to myself. it's a huge unit with dozens of miles between elk herds and they move dozens of miles a day when pressured
