Re: Nightshifters
We work two days 5 to 5 then 24 hr off then two nights 5 to 5 then four days off. If I take a weeks' vacation it gives me 12 days off. Lot better than when we worked seven straight days,3off,seven swings,2off,seven graves,2 off. All 8 hrshifts. Never knew whether I was coming or going.

Re: Nightshifters
I'll do 2 weeks of 8 hour swing, M-F, then 2 weeks of M-F grave, then 5 days off. Then it's Thurs-Sun days for 2 weeks, then Sat-Tues grave for 2 weeks. But now we're getting busy- there's a barge here now, another one in a few hours, and another on Sunday. We also had 2 ships in here last week. I got 20 hours of overtime in 3 days. Plus I'm working Xmas Eve and Xmas, which means at least 16 hours of double time and a half.

Re: Nightshifters
Just got off work this morning too! Yep, the compressed work week, 2 -12 hour day shifts (6:30-6:30), 24 off and two nights. Yes, 12 days off and 5 weeks vacation and throw in 4 floaters!
I'm on the converting end of the paper show, Brawny, Kirkland, Sparkle and Target paper towels. It's amazing how many paper towels the world uses. I have converted up to 40 tons of paper on a shift on one machine and we have three rewinders in my department.

Re: Nightshifters
I hate Mon-Fri, 8 hour shifts. Did it for 20 years and didn't realize what a drag it was until I got a rotating shift job. Working 5 days a week to get 40 hours in now seems like a completely inefficient waste of time. Working 12 hour shifts is awesome if you get 3 or 4 days off every week!

Re: Nightshifters
Our schedule depends on whether I'm on days or nights. Each is 12 hours.

We do quaker oatmeal paper, (Formed to bags in their facility), and Tite-Pak, (French Fry Bags), Paper, (Again folded and sealed into bags at their facility). It's also amazing how many French Fries people eat! Last night I ran 228 miles of Tite Pak! The machine next to mine ran more!

Re: Nightshifters
I work a rotating shift. 12 hours each either day or night from 6:30 to 6:30. Next 2 nights I volunteered to fill some spots. I'm supposed to be on my week off. Get one every month. Really funked up schedule, but it amounts to working 2 weekends, with a total of 15 days worked and 15 off each month....
Unload some railcars and trucks, load some trucks, look at Ifish.
Benefit of being single is I can work and let some of these guys go home and be with family on these holidays. Kids are only little for so long...
This schedule is supposed to leave me lots of time to fish, but lately, life's gotten in the way..... Why I thought buying a house and getting 2 labs was a good idea, i'll never know! (until they run up and kiss me hello.... )

Re: Nightshifters
Air traffic controllers work 24-7-365 and are required by law to work no more than 10 hours in any one day and they must have 8 hours between shifts.
Shifts are interesting. If you do not have the midshift that week you would start work (using the 24-hour clock): 16-15-14-11-7 or 15-15-11-7-6 or 15-15-7-6-5.
If you work the midshift then it would be: 15-14-6-5-23. The "quick turns" will kill you. Off at 2100 and back the next morning at 0600, come back the next morning at 0500, get off at 1300 and come back that night at 2300 to work the mid. They call it "the rattler".

Re: Nightshifters
That schedule doesn't look like a lot of fun there Crabbait. The one that gets us compressed workers is all the over time sometimes, working 11 out of 12 days and then getting hung 4 hours over. So 2 hours driving to work, work 12, then have to stay over 4 more, hmm...not a lot of time to sleep! Then of coarse they schedule you in early for a safety meeting yep, really interested in my safety!
Since I have a longer drive to home, I have learned to pull over and take a nap when the eyes get heavy. They say night workers driving tired is a big problem on the highways, I would agree with that.

Re: Nightshifters
I've been working night shifts for about the last 20 years in the telecommunications business. The worst was rotating shifts in the Navy. Never got used to that schedule. Now it's straight graveyard shifts. If a holiday happens to fall on my "weekend" then I get it off. Typically work through all holidays including Thanksgiving, X-mas & New Years. All in all, I feel fortunate to have a job regardless what shift I happen to be working.
