Eating Out ! ( Heart Healthy )
I am on a health kick ! Trying to avoid unhealthy food like Saturated Fats, Sugar, Fried foods. Being very selective about what I eat.
Someone made another Thread about good places to eat.
When It comes to eating out it isn't easy finding a Heart Healthy Eateries.
So I'd like to start another thread and Ask
Where are the Healthies places to eat that serve great food ?
My wife and I went to Cattle Company last night because she hadn't eaten dinner. There was only one item on the menu I could eat.
Salad with a Vinigerette..........

Sweet Tomatos is a good one if you are not after meat.

You can be picky at TODI, something for every one there. Seaweed salad, salad bar, edanama(sp?), noodles, raw steamed and boiled fish, veggies. Jellos for dessert.

Re: Eating Out ! ( Heart Healthy )
I'll bite on this one.
You can eat anything you want to and be healthy. IMO the key is moderation. Pasta? okay also, just eat a small amount. Fried foods? again okay just eat a little. (see my pattern developing?)
Speaking for myself, I changed my diet a year ago. My main problem was overeating. My cholesterol numbers were not very good, I was overweight...
since learning to eat less and move more I have lost a bunch of weight and my cholesterol numbers are back to normal.
I did not give up anything from my diet, just ate less of everything.
Other then fast food joints I think that most nice restaurants serve up pretty good food, just too much of it. So save some money, split a steak with your wife and get a salad. (lay off the bread basket also)
(I should note that I have 2 kids (2 & 4 yrs old) so my experience with "nice" restaurants lately is way behind.

Can't help you with places to eat but this website http://www.calorieking.com/foods/ is helpful for figuring out calories, fat ect of the food they serve. You should look up the costco muffins. I was shocked at how much fat is in one poppyseed muffin. Ok I'll save you the search (38 grams of fat).

Applebees has a Weight Watchers menu. I found the offerings acceptable.

Re: Eating Out ! ( Heart Healthy )
I used to go to Applebees on 82 nd but they've gone down hill a bit.\
"Turkey all the time"
Now we are getting somewhere. I have never been to Hubbers. I check it out.
By Heart Healthy I am talking about NO Beef, Pork or other domestic Red meat.
Elk, Venison, Game meat OK. Poultry, Fish ( Not fried ) OK.
I don't expect any eatery to have all Heart Healthy food But I would like some that provide some things on the menu that are. You'd be surprized how few places do !
I pack my own Salad dressing when I go out to eat.... So if nothing else I usually have a salad.

A lot of sandwich places are pretty healthy if u get extra veggies and choose a lean meat (and go light on the mayo or other fatty condiments).

I did the same exact thing, my cholesterol #'s were high, i ate smaller portions of most of the same foods, I did adjust a little and do read the labels more, and drinks lots of water. Lots of water, water will help you lose weight and being hydrated is a great feeling. You won't even know your dehydrated until you start drinking at least 8oz a day..
before you know weight starts coming off, you feel more energy, and just plain healthier..

Re: Eating Out ! ( Heart Healthy )
Mexican restaurants are a definite No No. Even the taco salad is a heart stopping potient, according to Weight Watchers.
Since dropping pounds, I rarely dine out which is a challenge for me because I'm single. When I do take in a restaurant, I go for a salad with some sort of healthy protein - chicken, fish or shellfish. Like you, I do vinegar and oil for dressing. I'm to the point now where I definitely prefer a good salad (with protein!) to steak and potatoes. (Did I really just say that?)
I do visit a chinese restaurant from time to time but order the same item every time - Chicken Chow Yuk. This dish has lots of veges although it is sauteed. Oh well, sue me!
Good for you for trying to eat healthy! It is not an easy thing to do, especially in America with all the fast foods. I haven't had a burger since deer camp and french fries...I can't remember when I ate some of those artery cloggers.
Merry Christmas!

Re: Eating Out ! ( Heart Healthy )
I agree with Sweet Tomatos, They have a great salad bar, good soup, baked potato, fruit bar, stay away from the muffins and ice cream machine and you can get out of there pretty heart healthy IMO.
My favorite thing with them is they have a decafinated diet soda. If you want a diet soda so you get a bajillion tablespoons of sugar in a soft drink, and your trying to avoid caffiene, there are very few places that offer a diet soda that isnt caffenated in sodas. Sweet Tomatos has a caffiene free diet coke.
Its those little things that keep people coming back.
