Web detective tech needed!
OK, Just got access to my servers reliable stats program.
This was the report this morning. Only problem is, I can't figure it all out!
How many hits IS ifish getting?
Read this and go figure;;;;
--------
Program started at Tue-13-Feb-2001 00:10.
Analysed requests from Mon-11-Dec-2000 16:55 to Tue-13-Feb-2001 00:11 (63.3 da
(Figures in parentheses refer to the last 7 days).
Successful requests: 2,993,221 (357,996)
Average successful requests per day: 47,284 (51,142)
Successful requests for pages: 365,240 (42,548)
Average successful requests for pages per day: 5,769 (6,078)
Failed requests: 5,482 (845)
Redirected requests: 3,901 (780)
Distinct files requested: 12,094 (3,684)
Distinct hosts served: 28,108 (5,313)
Data transferred: 17,971 Mbytes (2,131 Mbytes)
Average data transferred per day: 290,716 kbytes (311,752 kbytes)
Anyway, it is confusing, but lots and lots of numbers! Geesh!
Is this why he told me that ifish now needs to be on its own server?
Jen

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Hey Jen, since no one else replied, I felt obliged since RT called me a perfect southern gentlemen Should've heard what else he wuz a sayin' in da boat! I had to plug my virgin ears. Ok here's a stab for your numbers since I do the same for my website:
Analysed requests from Mon-11-Dec-2000 to Tue-13-Feb-2001 = roughly 2 months of action with the following results:
Successful requests: 2,993,221 (357,996)
Which means ifish has been hit that many times in that timeframe without errors. Not unique visitors, just new and repeated hits combined.
Average successful requests per day: 47,284 (51,142)
That's your daily average for hits to ifish without failure or errors. Notice how the past 7 days average is larger than the 2 month average? = more people with more time
Successful requests for pages: 365,240 (42,548)
That's the total number without any errors to view various links within the website.
Average successful requests for pages per day: 5,769 (6,078)
Again, just the daily average number for links found within without any errors. Not just unique users, but repeated users tallied in this number too. Every time a person clicks, then it adds to that number.
Failed requests: 5,482 (845)
Means that people had trouble viewing pages either due to internal problems, timeout errors, connection problems, etc.
Redirected requests: 3,901 (780)
Not really sure about this, so here's a stab: People who've clicked on the banners and such. Again, not just unique users just the number of times a banner was clicked on.
Distinct files requested: 12,094 (3,684)
I think this means they wanted only one part imparticularly in the website...like the bb link, and just clicked on that link. Again, clicks are counted, not people.
Distinct hosts served: 28,108 (5,313)
Now this is the part with unique servers visiting ifish. Notice how the majority of these people don't post or reply, just act like vultures for information without contributing directly to the masses.
Data transferred: 17,971 Mbytes (2,131 Mbytes)
Average data transferred per day: 290,716 kbytes (311,752 kbytes)
Pretty much telling ya the sizes of the pages the users are viewing. You can probably customize your software to find out exactly what sections are getting the most hits.
I hope this helps as I try my best to contribute to the confusion of this board

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Funny, but my old stats program showed So much less than this. I figure it is because it is at the very bottom of the page, and alot of times, I, and I suppose others click on a page, read some, and then click off before it fully loads, thus it doesn't have time to count as a hit.
Oh yeah, and Hey yall, about the visitors not posting, the report shows that not all visitors go to the board... It is true there are ALOT of lurkers out there, but some of them don't even go to the board.
And Congratulations RT, for all the work you have put in to make this a great board.
And.... psssst.... I think, I just hope, that Hey yall will be nice to me one more time in my future!
Jen

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Jennie:
Hey_yall pretty well handled the explanations of your message. Good job! I would say at this point that yes, you need your own server. Is that bad? Nope! Look what you've created. Between yourself and RT AND all the iFishers, you have the most informative, comical, and diversified WEB page going. I've looked at some others and they are drab compared to iFish.
I know I've experienced problems with getting on to the bulletin board especially. Thought it was my "almost on line" (giggle, RT) but I think it's just plain overload.
You have something here and please don't let it go. There's a bunch of us out here behind you, so capitalize on what you need to. This has turned into one of those things you just end up with in life and you're the kingpin! Congratulations for one hell of a Website, Jennie.

Re: Web detective tech needed!
What kind of money are we looking at? First for initial outlay and then for upkeep, upgrades, etc.
This site is almost as much fun as making love with the lights on. I'd be happy to help(with the money).

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Good job on the explanations Yall.
I think jennie needs 3 netra servers, with load balancing, housed in a room that is maintained at a constant temp with airflow from the bottom of the room to the top, and particle filtration. 0C3 connectivity, and 3 backup generators. Ifish would never be down, and all bottlenecks would be on our end.

Hey Jen Ramstrong knows all about it so he must be able to set you up with the right stuff really cheap. OMG I had no idea you had such a monster site. I know I read the posts daily. You going to join in on the ifish II floatilla on the Santiam Jen?

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Hey Jen, congrats on having the most accessed fishing website in the NW region. This site is being read by so many more people than just the regular contributing registered members. All of you members and your contributions and fun stories are kinda like a regional newspaper column people are reading daily. ...
BTW, I think you are wrong Os. Since we now know Mike ('Yall) is a good guy and his "hey_yall" is kinda like an exageration of his own personna (he is funny and entertaining, as are you), we can expect the true 'Yall to be just as fun, but w/o the hard core stuff. Thanks for the help with the above Mike. ... And as for you Mr. Osprey (also with first name of Mike), you are as good a guy as they come! Keep up the fun you 2 guys; just tone it down to 'R' rated . - Steve

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Of course she is going Steelie S! You and Bill are going to do Flotilla II, right Jen? .... And what Ryan told you ... he beat me to it. That's just what I was going to suggest . Ya, right. I know that kind of stuff . And Trout, you and I are still going to have to get off AOL, "Almost On Line", regardless. It's broadband cable for me soon! But I do think that the increasing downlaod time on Ifish for some of us is due to the great amount of traffic it gets. Jen, if we have outgrown whatever it is you are using (I'll have you or Ryan try to explain it to me someday ), by all means let's get an Ifish contribution fund to get our own server. This is some site for free! Of course it is more that a site now - it is a community. I don't think it would be tough at all with a voluntary fund raiser to get our own server. With the number of registered members alone it would only take very small contribution amounts. Food for thought anyway. - Steve

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Hey Ram, I'm thinking OC12 or OC 48. Then we could do virtual movies on the board with no user problems that are bandwidth related. There is a 192 backbone that runs through Portland if you want to see some smoke coming out of the Netras

Re: Web detective tech needed!
Jennie,
It's your dog if ya want to walk it. In deciding your own server, I suggest you taking a hard look at your stats program, tweak it to do several different things, such as the very first day it came online. Then, give yourself guesstimated projections on how big it will grow. Decide on your server from there. A good server for this kind of use will run anywhere between $5K - $15K or more. Depends on what kind of bones you want to throw your dog.
I personally suggest having a server that can maintain realtime movies, such as proper technique demonstations, knot tying, and the **** helmet chugging down a quart of beer.
