Wolf tags anyone?
Cut and paste from todays Idaho Statesman! Looks like we're finally going to get to manage the wolves as a big game animal. I'll sign up, I'd love a nice wolf pelt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hmmm, do I need a new gun for this???????

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
I'll buy a tag, could have filled it several times in Idaho.
Hopefully we won't be hunting them in Oregon anytime soon-- because they won't be here in numbers great enough to hunt.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
Are they actually going to issue tags or do they just plan to let ranchers shoot them for the protection of their livestock ?
I bet you it won't take long to get them back on the endangered list if they just open season like Coyotes.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
Abalone,
In MT and ID they can already shoot them if caught harrassing or killing livestock, unless the population drops below a certain threshhold. This is talking about tags, regulated harvest you might say to bring numbers in line with prey and tolerance.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
It would have happend sooner if WY hadn't been shooting themselves in the foot for as long as they did. I'm glad the controlled hunts will move forward.

True, although from what I've read, Wyoming did finally get some concessions as a result of their stance. The territory that the wolves have to be protected is much smaller than before, and outside of that territory they can basically eliminate them through any means necessary.
Here's a story from the Jackson Hole newspaper with more info:
Quote:
“This is great progress from where we were,” [Wyoming Governor Dave] Freudenthal said.
Federal and state officials have been discussing the new proposal in some circles for about six weeks. It includes expanding the area in northwest Wyoming where the state can manage wolves as trophy game, while allowing the state to manage them elsewhere as predators that can be shot on sight.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
I e-mailed a friend in Montana with that link and said "take a look at this you guys might get a wolf hunting season soon". The reply I got back verbatim was:
"Depending on who you talk to, we already have one."
I thought that was pretty funny but in all seriousness I would love to go wolf hunting and I would definitely pay out of state tag fees to bag a wolf.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
This good news has lifted a heavy load from my heart. Now that the Feds are won over, the battle moves over to fighting the pro-wolf groups law suits.
Wolf should taste like something you have eatin in a Chinese restaurant... hope to find out soon...
This is really starting to feel like Christmas, first the house passed the "Animal Enterpirse Terrorism Act" and then the Feds fold on the wolf's endangered species protection. Hunters are having a very good month...Merry Christmas.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
OK; legit tags I say a Nosler 140gr. Accub. 7mm SAUM at 500 yrds is a good take. Rem. Model 7 Mag. Maybe I will put it in a 1lb. stock(carbon fiber w/ c.fiber bedding block) good for a 15mile hike see.....at 55yrs......and it won't cost the $2500 elk tag price. A much better trophy in my eyes..

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
The Feds didn’t fold it was the intention all along to de-list the populations once multi-state management plans were accepted and in place once the populations exceeded management objectives. The Endangered Species Act doesn’t “fold”. I am glad these populations will be managed with the sale of tags to the public, and so quickly too. Normally recover/reintroductions take decades to get to this point. The Feds consider this a success story not a fold.

Re: Wolf tags anyone?
I hear the go to sound for the Fox Pro when hunting wolves is hound dogs baying at tree. From what I heard, some of the Idaho boys already got that one figured out.
This is good news, now lets see if it stays that way.
