As a once apon a time residence, the answer is YES!!

The toys you see in duty free shops and etc are just that..toys./souvineer(sp?)

The real ones (aboriginal hunting tool) are as thick as a 2 x 4 and approx 30" in length and weighs a few pounds.

There are also different models that the Abos use. Some are non-symetrical, i.e. one leg is longer than the other.

Some S.W. American Indian tribes used similar weapons, simply called "Throwing Sticks" and used them mainly for hunting rabbits. Our Indians never figured out the "return to where thrown" concept that the outback Abos did ...a very interesting design using two airfoils with each leg the REVERSE profile of the other.

I bought a few boomorangs when I was in Australia..both the kind that return and the real ones made for killing things. They usually used them to kill kangaroos. I wouldn't want to be hit by one.

You know what they call a boomorang that doesn't come back?...........................................A stick!

This thread reminds me of the old Charlie Drake song, "My Boomerang won't come back". Used to have it on a 45, that's what we older dudes called a "record" back in the day. Anyone remember it?

I tried the toy ones as a kid, got em' to come back a few times too. Unfortunately I was not terribly athletic and it would usually smack me in the noggin....

Unfortunately I do remember the song. Thanks for sending out the website. I found out how to throw a boomorang while in Australia. There is a certain flick of the wrist that you have to do to get the dang thing to head back your way. I bought a couple of "kid's" boomorangs to give away but that's been a few years and somehow they don't make it out of my reach.

My friend took one just below the nose! He has a pretty nice scar on his upper lip now. Wasn't funny at the time, but was later. It is a great conversation piece around the fire!
