Default Leatherbacks?

Was reading some Alaskan Boards a while back and I swear these guys were talking about Leatherback Chinook? Claiming that these fish come in with the main run and then return to sea without spawning? or possibly they were repeat spawners, I don't know. Any references, ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. If I could only find that web page! Arrgghhh

Possibly in my drunken stupor I was reading about our Atlantic cousins.

Thanks,

BM

Hey meyersbilly. I read something to that effect in a issue of STS magazine a few month's ago . I think they were talking about the lower kenai river run's . I'm not positive if it was the early or late kenai king's , but I am sure it was in STS . Hope this will help you out. . MIKIE

There is a run of sterile chinook that were released in SE Alaska. The idea being that if they never spawned, they could get huge. I heard about it while I was there fishing, but it was second hand, so who knows how valid it is.

I do know that they have a white-meated chinook strain up there as well. Supposedly the cream of the crop - more fat in the meat then regular chinooks and a real prize for people who catch one.

Interesting thread, but am a bit confused about the white chinook/spring possibly being a primo eating product. Generally white chinooks are not considered particularly great as far as eating is concerned, is this a special strain? Got me curious now.

A buddy brought back some white meated nookies from B.C. Those were some of the best smoked salmon I ever had. I would like to try some on the grill. Tasted like smoked Tuna.
