first gun ?
I was thinking of getting my 9 year old daugter her first gun for x-mas. I thought about a BB gun but, after looking around I cant find a youth size BB gun but I did see some good youth 22 rifles. She has shown a lot of interest in hunting and I want to start her out right. Does anyone know of a good youth BB gun or should I just go for the 22?

Re: first gun ?
Get her a little chipmunk 22lr they are great and you can speen alot of time without alot of money burning through the bricks. Plus you can teach her good gun control and shooting. I believe they are bolt action so she can pick her spot.

Re: first gun ?
Get a Ruger 10-22 autoloader with a wooden stock and then cut 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches off the buttstock. When she is grown you can put a folder or other aftermarket stock on it. If you don't want to cut the "stock" stock you can find them on here or on craig's list. I am saving my short stock for my grandkids.
The chipmunk is probably too small for a 9 year-old and even if it isn't she will likely outgrow it in a year or two. By adapting a 10-22, you get to use in for many years.
This is what I did with my twin daughters when they were 9. Now that they are 14, I have a Butler Creek folder on it.
When they were ready for big game I bought a New England Firearms single shot with .223 and .243 barrels.

I would not recommend an autoloader as a first firearm.

Why? You can still load it one at a time just like a single shot.
If you really want to get a gun that's just for her, there's 2 chipmunk models that come with pink stocks. One is Synthetic and the other laminate. The girls love em.

Re: first gun ?
In my opinion, teach your child about gun safety while using something that wont shoot a mile. Daisy air rifles are great BB guns. Lots of sizes to choose from. They're strong enough to kill pigeons and squirrels, yet you dont have to worry about stuff a half mile down range. I got mine when I was 6 and shot it almost daily until I wore it out- 10 years later.

Re: first gun ?
My first gun was a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. Much "game" fell to that awesome weapon. My next gun was .22 cal pellet gun. It could actually punch a hole in a tin can whcih was plenty of velocity for me. After that I got a single shot .22 Rifle with a scope on it. Many digger Squirrels met their end at my hands in NE Oregon. I still have that .22 and it is destined for my Grandson as his first rifle. We take it out of the Gun Cabinet and look at it and talk about it every now and then. When he gets a little older, there will be an official transfer of ownership.

Re: first gun ?
Have an old single shot I used on the Grand Kids, it worked good and they learned to shot not just pull the trigger, esp. if there was three in line and you only had one shot before you waited. Worked real good and my oldest just got his first and maybe only gun for a long time, he is 11 and will hunt next year, was looking with my son for a gun he's left handed, ended up with a 300 WSM, I think this will be a gun he can grow up with, looked at a lot of others but 7MM never impressed me, 338 was a bit much and more than you need for deer, 30-06 a little light for Elk, now before anyone jumps on this this is my personel opinion. But the 22 is a lot better gun for a first learner gun, the BB gun is ok but I think they learn more safety from a 22 because the teacher respects it more than a BB gun. Just my 2 Cents................Ray

Re: first gun ?
My Dad was a hunters safety instructor for years. He didn't like BB guns, because kids treated them like "toys". My first gun was (is, I still have it) a 20 gauge youth model, single shot. His theory was to teach respect for the weapon...It worked, that thing felt like a cannon at first. The gun was a good hunting tool, fit me, and still has room in the safe!! This might not be the best approach, I'm just offering another opinion.
Good luck and congratulations on a kid that wants to join you in the woods!!!

Re: first gun ?
My .02 is to find a 22lr Remington made in the '30s on... a Model 131 I believe/ it's tube fed bolt but the KEY is that the safety is a flag design that flips up into the sight picture "on safety" This safe ON immed. recognition design is great for beginners. It promotes use of safe and dependance on looking for it.\
No auto loaders.....because.... beginners have enough to do with loading /un-loading,safety ON safety_____OFF, adding shells/ taking shells out of the Bbl.safety off safety on/ adding to the mag. or removing the mag and moving to another location.......................................... ........
Is there a round in the chamber NOW!???????????????????????????
That situation could cost a LIFE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Re: first gun ?
go with the 22, and with the no auto thing find a good bolt, lever or single action to start out. We had an old Rem single action growing up great gun to learn with much safer as well.

Re: first gun ?
My vote would go to a Taurus replica of the old Winchester pump .22lr.
I think the principles of open sights & hammer safeties are under taught and a pump sets the stage for a good Rem870 shotgun down the road.
Just my opinion...

Re: first gun ?
Get the 22, super cheap to shoot, get a single shot and stay away from the auto loaders.
I got my son a break action single shot when he was 5. he is a lefty and I had problems finding something for him in lefty action, that was small enough and finally settled on the break action.
I should get my daughter one of those pink ones, they are pretty cute for a girl.

Re: first gun ?
Single shot .22 bolt action, they're inexpensive, and cheap to shoot. As mentioned previously, I will have to agree that BB guns are too often viewed as "toys", because I remember thats how I viewed them as a child. My first gun that I learned to shoot with, was an old sears single shot .22, and seemed to do the job for me.

Re: first gun ?
First, thanks for all the imput I decided to go with the Ruger 10/22. So she can have a good gun for life. I plan on cutting the stock and replacing it when she gets older. I will be careful to only load 1 round at a time until she is competent and comfortable with it.
Hunt'nfish I have a old pump 22 my grandpa gave me when I was a boy. IT is a PIONEER gamble'stories. The spring is weak so it dosen't fire every time any more but it is still a cool looking gun.

Hands down, without a question, this is a great gun to start out on. (I had the Interarms model of this.) I would say the rifle described above, or the Cricket. (The Cricket is a .22 bolt action for youth that has replaced the Chipmunk. Comes in pink, black and blue I believe, and isn't too expensive.) I would have her point the two of these and see what fits her.

Re: first gun ?
One of my first guns was a Ruger 10/22, wood stocked with a 4X scope on it. I cannot tell you how much this gun taught me about shooting, including safety. My father would take me on trips to eastern oregon to shoot rabbits. Shooting rabbits running through the sage brush with this set-up, taught me how to shoot blacktails running through the brush of the Willamette Valley. Get them a 22lr and create numerous memories for them. I am smiling as I write this remembering some of my amazing shots I made as a boy, and the compliments from my father on those shots. Some things should never be forgotten.

Re: first gun ?
I say,skip the BB gun. I bought my daughter a .22 for x-mas when she was 8yrs.Went with a Mossberg Plinkster,10 shot clip,bolt action
(don't recomend auto),,got it with a pink stock. After her first shooting trip she wanted a scope;so I put a Bushnell 4 power on it,she loves it.Dang good shot too!Last Sunday she put 2 in the same hole, middle of bullseye, and then stacked 3 more quarter inch apart at 50 yards. At 80 yards she can hit clay birds with every shot.Think she out shoots me(that sucks)Ya,I'm a proud DAD. Good luck.

Yes, something like this would be just GREAT!
When I was a kid some of my friends actually HAD exactly THIS (Winchester) rifle (that had belonged to their Dad's or Grandads when new)!
I had a Remington Model 12C (Hammerless Pump) that belonged to my Grandmother...still have it!

Had a Winchester very similar as a kid, but it was in .22WRF, shells became real scarce. It would shoot a LR but split the case. Used to pack it running the hounds, knocked a few coons outa the tree with it. Brother gave it to somebody years ago to restock, it disapeared. Use to carry a Remington no. 6 .22LR rolling block, great little coon gun, brother has that one now, but it shoots alittle sideways.

Re: first gun ?
Definetly a BB gun, I am a 4-H shotgun instructor and I start the kids out with Daisies, NOT THE RED RYDER, this is so inaccurate the kids would quit, absolutely no good even Daisy Reps will tell you, I bought the RR when I first started our shooting program, I cut the front site down so it is just a bead, the rear site I completely eliminate, After shooting the RR for 20 minutes you know how inaccurate it is so I called up Daisy HQ and they told me no the guns I wanted were the 880's and the 840's, both pumps, the 840 holds 350 bb's and the 880 holds only 50, I duct taped a rubber recoild pad off my Beretta 12, and I shoot the 840, also called the Grizzly. We shoot at pop cans first, if they haven't shot ANYTHING, one pump is all we want, we want to see the bb and where it is hitting. After they shoot at pop cans and can hit them we may move back a little or move on to the moving targets that I make up. Very simple--16 feet long, 2x4, 3-4 feet high on ea. end( I have 3 different heights and a vertical one, springing teal to any clays shooters) The ends are vertical and braced to the bottom 2x4, at the top of ea. vert we screw a 4-5 inch block to hold our 3/8 inch shaft that holds our pulley around which goes parachute cord and our target is suspended from the cord, driven by a simple 3/8" drill motor, very inexpensive, easy to build and MOST OF ALL, (the kids, Big and small) love it and will shoot for hours!~ More tomorrow, GoodNite, ROD

I think this little youth 22 LR (Marlin 915Y Little Buckaroo) is one of the best out there. Both of my girls learned to shoot with it:

Re: first gun ?
My dads first gun was a Winchester Model 62 he got on his 11th birthday (April 1947). That same gun was what I learned shooting, firearms safty, and gun cleaning on. And I'm very happy to say that my kids will too.
Cheers,
Adam
