Default Metolius Winter Rondi

I'm heading to the Metolius next month for a weekend of camping and fishing. Anybody want to join me? Mokai says he's in. It'd be cold but always fun. I'm heading over on Friday morning Jan. 12 and coming home either on Sunday or Monday depending on weather.

Show your true mountain man spirit and come on over.

Bob

If I am not working that weekend I will drive out for the day. I don't think I will be camping in the cold though, living only a few minutes away..

Thinking about camping at Alingham but if it is not open (which some of the camp grounds aren't) I will post paper plates or something as to where I am. Stop by and say hi!

Checked in with the boss. It is an 80% go for me. In fact, short of that, count me in. Not sure what's going on, but I am losing it and need to get out. Count me in if at all possible pass on any details.

Hey Bob...Pine Rest campground is open and just a bit downstream from Alingham..It has that gazebo thing with a fireplace..That would be a great place to hang out in the evenings and talk of the big ones that got away..

Duuuuuuuuuude. No go. I have a commitment in the afternoon on Saturday I can't miss. Would love to, but nope. I can't thank you enough for making a move to gather though. I'm in for Feb. or March though for sure. Maybe we set up another gathering at the Devils Fork campground (?) on the Big D in March just like the good ole days. You know the kind where I lost my jacket and polled the world trying to retrieve it; and the one where GBS got a flat tire, changed it and then heard another hissing when we got to Locked Gate. Yeah... those were the days.

Man........what's the weather going to do? Dump a bunch of snow? Just darn cold? A mix? Looks like a wait till closer to the end of the week. If it is dumping snow and chains required not sure what to do. Clear and cold would be good, me thinks.

The forecast for Camp Sherman for this weekend is single digits at night and low 30s during the day..Looks like sunny skies though ..Bringing extra propane for the heater..

Got some firewood tonight and lots of propane. Looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend. Got the coffee pot loaded, gonna need lots of hot coffee. Just have to remember to pack the fishing gear. I'm gonna try to be out of here by 9:00 Friday morning and over there around noon. An hour in the fly shop at the Camp Sherman store and off to the river. Looking forward to seeing everybody that comes over.

Below zero in parts of Bend this morning. Hard to fish when you're guides are ice cubes.

I'm voting on 3 pairs of long johns and a warm cabin!

Ok, I assume the lack of response means everyone is still hospitalized with frostbite, right?

I'm back no frostbite. (barely) Mokai is staying one more night. I went over Friday and he joined me on Saturday. Last spring I picked up a 0 degree sleeping bag and boy am I glad I did. I stayed toasty as long as I was in the sack. Got up Saturday morning and as soon as I left the tent my hands went numb from the cold. Jugs of water froze solid inside my car. No ice in my icechest and a gallon of water frozen solid inside of the ice chest as well as my eggs. State Police stopped by Saturday afternoon, (think they were amazed someone was actually out there camping) and said it was 5 below Saturday morning. Brrrrrr! No fish for me but what a great experience and what a beautiful place.

A few picks and I'm sure Mokai will post a few when he gets back.

Well here it is..The report of my side of the trip..For those of you that have never had the chance to camp and fish with 3riversbob your missing out..What a great guy..And tough too..It was cold , real cold..But after a bit I seemed to get used to it..

I caught two Bull trout on the trip..One about 18" and the other between 8 and 10 pounds..I dont have the pic of the big one yet as I am waiting for my friend to send it to me..That big bull fought hard and took me into my backing..My new 8wt handled it great..Talk about a great way to break in the new rod..

Here are some photos of the trip..For all that said we were crazy for camping there in winter..I would do it again in a second..

I wish I was there. I went last year under a different moniker (Gettin' Birdy) and really enjoyed the company even if the bulls weren't cooperative. I've been on a bit of a hiatus but would like to resurrect the idea of a future trip spawned (pun intended) around a campfire last year at the 'Rondi. John Day Smallmouth anyone? (sorry about the hijack).

Looks like a good trip was had by the hardy souls who attended this year. What is it about wintertime fishing on the Metolius that requires frigid temps anyways?

Tight Lines,

-T.C.
