Default Someone in our family is suffering from "Broken Wag"

Also know as

"Cold water tail,"
"limber tail syndrome,"
"broken tail,"
"dead tail,"

Yes poor Kona has a cold in her tail or a sprain.

Caused by lots of duck retrieves.

Austin Powers lost his Mojo.

Kona has lost her Wag.

She will be fine in a couple of days.

My last lab had the same problems after a long day of duck hunting. Always went away after a couple of day. ( tail just hangs no wag nothing) After this weekend and seeing this dog with the same thing I knew it was common. I looked it up on the internet, and sure enough.

Anyone else see this in their dog?

yup after a hard day of swimming i have seen my dog's tail go limp but it always seems to come back. It looks painful but in a way i look at it like at least he wont be knocking anything of the table for a day or too.

LOL! Yes a lab does pack a weapon for nic nacks.

Olive the last lab, for her it lasted 2-3 days.

We will see with Kona. She has been sleeping well today.

And getting spoiled, but she earned it!

After hard days in the field Kacey has suffered from the broken wag. It seems that she recovers in a couple of days off. I have noticed that her back legs are very tight at these times like she suffers from crampped muscles.

Interesting, broken wag huh?
Then Chance is a wimp, cuz he shutdown on us and never did loose his wag.
(Then again he's only a little over a year old.)
It was so funny, we'd drop one and he's just look at it, wimper and shake.
Wanted it SO bad, just nothing left in him. Chasing a couple cripples in flooded timber plumb wore him out.
A bag of peanut butter kibbles and he was fine for the hike out.
Think I need to watch his sugar levels more when we hunt him hard like that.

What's really funny, I got up Sunday and walked outside to get have a smoke and he jumps up in the boat and I holler sorry not today buddy...and he starts wimpering again...like, ah shucks...PLEASE?

Cold water, hard work and jumping all contribute to dead tail. It's pretty common with competition jumping dock dogs. Mine have gotten it before. Most people don't realize how much the dogs use their tails for this stuff. Conditioning helps but the best conditioned dogs still get it. That tail should start coming back in 3-5 days and you'll probably notice your dog's attitude getting better too. It is common for Labs to be depressed when their tails stop working.

My dog has had it several times as well. Seems to clear up on its own after a day or two.
