Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Hi guys,
I'm a new fish in a new pond. Can someone recommend a hot spot for bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Any information would be very appreciated (as to what should I fish with and how should I do it ) as I'm not just from another state or country but from another continent.
Thanks in advance.
This morning I went fishing at the Willamette river. The water in the river is pretty high and murky after a storm last Thursday. Didn't catch anything. But saw a beaver.

Alpine (between Corvallis and Eugene). Monmouth on weekends.
By the way, on another forum someone suggested to try the Walling Pond in Salem. So today I did. You have nice fish in that pond!

Welcome. This time of year is not the best for fishing for bass and panfish. As spring comes you will start seeing more post on where and how to fish. It would also help us to know a few more things about you. How long have you been fishing? That kind of fishing have you done in the past such as do you use bait like worms and such or do you use lures? Are you looking for fish you can eat? Do you have a boat? The more information we have the better we can help you find the best place for you to fish. For example there are some places in the rivers in the that you need a boat in order to find the best spots but there are also some that you can find really good fishing from the shore. I also would suggest that you not eat any bass or panfish from the Willamette River because the water can be comtaminated but there are some really good lakes ponds and river that you can safely eat the fish. The best advice I can give is to keep checking back here to see when the fishing starts to pick up again. Once I get back out on the water in the spring I will keep you up to date one where I am fishing and how I am doing.
Once again welcome to ifish.

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Welcome Anatoli.
If you are in Alpine the closest good bass fishing is the Long Tom River. It runs from Fern Ridge to the Willamette River. One of the best places to hit it is just north of Monroe. Go to Bellfountain, turn right on Dawson Rd. Dawson becomes Hubbard when it crosses 99W. Just past 99 is a bridge over the Long Tom. Park just east of the Long Tom. There is a gate on the south side. Make sure you shut it behind you as there are animals in the pasture there. There is a lot of structure all over and the river moves slow there. Another place to go, close to Corvallis would be to continue south on 99W and turn right when you see a sign to Kiger Island. You will come to a bridge. A friend of mine caught a 9# LM there from a float tube. If it is still alive, it is probably still there. (I know, everyone is still asking themselves, Does Jon have a friend? )
Tight lines all!

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Thanks guys. Jon5, thanks for detailed info. I passed that bridge over the Long Tom river many times and always asked myself is there is bass there. The place looks promising. Now after your reply I'll definitely give it a try.
By the way I was fishing the Walling Pond in Salem today again (with PowerBait this time, not night crawlers like yesterday) and I got this little beauty!

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Today I went fishing for bass at the Long Tom river. My luck ran out before my fishing adventure even got started. I went to Dari-Mart to buy some worms but they were out. I wasn't deterred, I decided to dig up some worms on the river bank. But it was frozen out and the worms were deep underground. I found one puny one though. The water was high and murky. I tried with a bobber and without one, no bites. The last twenty minutes I tried fishing from the bridge. But the same result. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Because the rivers are too muddy I was thinking it might be a good idea to try lake fishing. Jon, you seem to know this area well. Could you recommend a local lake to fish in? Do you know anything about Horton Lake? I've been there once and it is beautiful.

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
I have no doubt now that while I was spending hours and hours without any success trying to catch something in muddy rivers, people were catching fish in lakes and ponds. Today I was fishing at the Junction City Pond. That was fun!

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Good report! Lakes and ponds are definately smarter when the rivers are muddy. I know nada about Hammond. The only local lakes I have bassed at are Foster and Green Peter. In big lakes bass are deep. Everywhere you find them now they are very very slow. I am waiting for spring. My to everyone who is out there now.

Today I was fishing at Junction City Pond again and it was another great fishing day. I think until spring I'm going to have fun catching trout at Junction City Pond.

Hi, Anatoliy.
If you want to catch large bass and plenty of them, then you need to fish Eastern Oregon. Willamate valley is OK, but does not even compare to the other warmer part of Oregon.

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Welcome! I live in Creswell and am constantly looking for that special fishing hole. Junction City is fun and well-stocked. It can be VERY crowded once decent weather hits. I enjoy fishing Cottage Grove Res. as well as Dorena. The most beautiful days have been spent at Ten-Mile Lake. Apparently, the bass fishers enjoy this lake. I haven't been extemely lucky at this lake but have had some of my favorite quiet days on the lake with the bonus of catching some fish.

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
You might start hitting the Long Tom River just below Fern Ridge Dam for crappie, bullheads &, yes, even small carp. Use a small crappie tube under a small float like a Thill that will balance with 1 or 2 BB shot and the jig. 18-24" deep will do the trick and start fishing within just a couple of feet of the bank. Usually lots of fish, although on the small side. Very popular. You will have company. It kicks off good in February, but they are there all the time.

Re: Bass or panfish fishing in Willamette valley, OR?
Anantoliy, if you have access to a boat you can put in at the Peoria boat ramp and go up stream to the mouth of the Long Tom. There's a fairly large area that I've found in the past to be very productive for Largemouth and Smallmouth. I've had my best luck with rubber frogs and 3" floating Rapalas. It is a bit early to fish there now though. I ussually wait until the H2O hits about 50 to 60 degrees. Ussually about late March or April.
