I sent an email to several reps regarding the post about the change in how ODFW's director is selected. Posted below is his response.
February 9 2001
Dear Mr. Kern,
Thank you for your letter concerning SB 49. I have not heard any convincing
arguments to transfer the power to hire the director of the Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife from the ODFW Commission to the Governor.
While I believe the confirmation process provides the necessary check and
balance for appointed positions, I do recognize that political agendas on all
sides can play a role in one's decision to confirm or deny an appointment. As
elected officials, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard and consider the
qualifications of each candidate on an individual basis before making decisions.
I want you to know that as legislation comes before this body I will consider
all views and facts before making decisions.
If I can be of further assistance, please to not hesitate to contact my
legislative aide, Jill Brunelle, at (503) 689-1907 or at
jill.brunelle@state.or.us.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me.
Sincerely,
Dan Gardner
House Democratic Leader
