yep, pretty common anymore....they are going to impact my steelhead season this year, they are a lot tougher to catch than a steelhead fun to try though

I had hiked into the backside of Oxbow park and crossed bear tracks on the way in. Fished from the top back down for maybe an hour or so. On the way back found the tracks of a coug following my tracks next to the bear tracks, never had the hair on my neck rise so fast!!!!!!

Ssshh. Don't tell me these things. My 'arms' are inadequate for four legged critters.

I was enjoying steelheading in the snow in December. Saw elk, deer, and raccoon tracks at one spot. I think cougar tracks would have sketched me out though.

I did a quick search to little avail and now I'm curious....anybody know of an up-to-date cougar density map?

Interesting fact about cougars in Oregon. There are no recorded cases of a cougar attack or a bear attack in Oregon. No injuries at least.

very rare indeed for bear attacks, and no lion attacks....i do think we will start seeing it though, the population is as high as it's been in a very long time.

they certainly are not dangerous, i put myself into a perfect position to be cat poop last spring, but i'm here, i have a feeling it was pretty close, but did not attack me, and fled after a short standoff leaving me less than 10 ft from it's deer kill and tiny cub. very cool animals, rare to actually see, hard on ungulates, but not us.

The reason I had the hair raising sensation was from living in northern Ca,next to Auburn Ca to be exact, where several hikers had been killed right before moving here. Different conditions at the the time, but still freaky. Forgot to mention this happened here in 2009.

I found two sets of cougar tracks in different locations in December. Along with deer, beaver (fun tracks), rabbits, raccoon, otters, mice/voles, bobcat, coyote, and some I'm forgetting.

I spend 40 hours a week in the woods alone and have no issues with cougars. The sketchiest part of my work is around Johnson Creek and Mt. Scott due to homeless camps.

It's amazing how urban the cougar tracks tend to be, at least where I find them.

I am not saying I wouldn't be afraid if one confronted me but I would feel a little more assured. Most the time I am in the woods I am carrying anyhow.
Bears do make me nervous but I have encountered them a few times. About a year ago I did have a Cougar encounter at the coast. It was at night and I had one scream outside my tent. Probably about 100 yards out. That got my attention.

Good information on the bears. I stand corrected. They do get POed when they get shot. My partner shot one with his bow a couples seasons ago. The bear was not happy.

I lived in the Auburn Lake Trails Community (Cool CA etc.) in the early 90s (I think 92 or 93 it happened) when a lady jogger was killed in the adjacent canyon by a cougar. The DFG paddy wagon set up shop in front of my house one day and sent riffle packing dudes after that cougar which I recall was shot.

wounded predators are very dangerous, especially bear.....but even at that, the risk of one inflicting harm on us is pretty darn slim....my most dangerous animal encounter fishing or hunting was cattle....i don't trust those pasture zombies

We were in Garden Valley and Georgetown before moving here. 2003-05 there were attacks on riders and runners at third gate.

I've had the chance to run into a number of cougars between fishing and trail running out here on the Olympic Peninsula.

If you click the link below and then press the play button I have a short clip of a cougar crossing the river right above us that was onto a herd of elk. The elk made the most bizarre sounds when they found out they were being stalked. They shot in front of us around the river bend with the kitty not far behind. It was a BIG Tom.

If I'm walking out of the woods late in the day and it's getting a little dark out, I'll stop and look behind me a couple of times on the way back to the truck. I'm more concerned with what I might find when I get to the truck because you never know what might be going on there? Don't want to be surprised by persons of questionable character.

Yeah, and we can expect even more kitties once the new Mcmenamins goes in at Kalama.

True story. I visited a nearby dairy that had a bull in with a large number of cows in a pen I would guess was 50 yards square. The nice lady assured me that if I jumped the fence and tried to run from one side of the pen to the other, I would not live to regret my lapse in judgement. Apparently Dairy bulls can be a particular risk.

He was a great daddy (apparently) but on my farm his mean ass would have been low quality hamburger.

Most bears I see are running away. I've seen tracks of wolves and big cats.

Its the dudes that live in the bushes that give me the willies though...

2002, elk hunting Ukiah followed in by cat.

2005, elk hunting Wilson unit, cat followed my track for couple hundred yards.

Both time I had my revolver not sure if I could of dropped one if they jump on me from behind.

The amount of available food is the x factor. A couple people were killed by a hungry cat, one was partially consumed down in the LA hills a few years ago.

About 10 years ago, a guy was knocked down on the Kalama, as he walked in the canyon. The hit came on the backpack he was carrying. When the lucky angler looked up, he saw the cat bounding away.

About a month ago, I was in the far upper reaches of one of my favorite rivers. We fished a small spot for an hour or so. When we jumped in the truck to drive upstream, we came upon a bear, running way from us. It was only about 50 yards from where we were fishing.

I am always packing in the woods. Never know what you may encounter. A guy in camp last time I hunted near burns took a nice cat that was in the rocks just above camp. He decided to keep his little kids in camp for the rest of the hunting season. I am always try to be prepared for a puddy tat encounter
