Default Newport Herring

When is the best time to go? How do you find out if they are in? Are there still public access to docks?

Just got thinking this morning that my boys would love to go down a fill a few buckets.

Thanks

Cureless

Just replying this to move it back up to the top because I have had questions about this myself. As a kid we used to go to Brookings during July and it seems like the herring fishing was good then but have wondered if there were other places and times to go.

The guy who could answer this is Wak'm Stak'm who use to post here regularly and is from Newport. He was posting last summer about jigging for herring off the docks and then going out in the ocean and nailing the coho's. that is all I know about it.

I will try to find him in the search function and see If I can get an email to him to answer this.

edit: email sent we will see if we can get him to come out of the archives and answer this.

The herring run is unpredictable. I talked with a dory fisherman last night who remembers jigging for them on Valentines Day in the past. I myself remember them showing up later than that. When they do show the sturgeon bite drops off to nothing that much I very clearly remember.

Early March is what I remember from last year. I just don't remember a strong run, seemed like the bulk of the run lasted just days instead of weeks. When you hear the herring are in, better get over right away.

Two years ago lots of people jigged off the south beach marina docks. I remember watching these little fish jumping all over the marina at night.

Years ago you could always find herring from spring through summer. Very common to jig for bait before and after salmon fishing.

The South Beach Marina Store is another place to call for info.

Yaquina Bay was surveyed today and I was told there were some large schools of herring scattered between the bridge and the big green l.n.g. tank. There were also some in South Beach Marina. The fish were reported to be pretty green yet. This usually means they will be moving around a lot and probably be most accessable from a boat. Haven't seen much jigging activity from the docks as yet.
