An Idea?
I would like to get some feed back on a group fishing trip for summer steelhead on the South Santiam. It could be be in mid to late june or the first of july.
Ok here is a rough plan. Meet in Lebanon for breakfast. All drive to Sweet home and launch, Fish and have fun. Then we could have lunch at a park on the river just above the take out, Laugh, Lie and generally have a good time.
I know June is a ways off, But Imjust trying to get an idea on how many people would be interested.

Re: An Idea?
I would be willing to make that run with my driftboat and a team of ifish members. Got a brother in law who lives in Sweet Home who could fill in as our Oregon redneck mascot for the trip. Since our southern buddy hey_yall probably wont be able to make it since greyhound dont service Sweet Home
Anybody fishing in Sweet Home and not packing heat is just flirting with getting the opportunity to squeal like a pig.

Re: An Idea?
Hey, who wouldn't want to do the sequel to 'Floatilla the One'?! I'd call it "Floatilla Two - The Revenge of the South" . As if BOE mentioning squealing pigs wasn't enough (it was), I couldn't imagine 'Yall missing something with 'Revenge of the South' in it . Hey Salmonator (you can also call him 'Chasingator'), early dibs on any open seat in your boat; if you can go and if your family + close friends don't get on your case about that. I have driftboat rowed the Packsaddle Park run on the N. Santiam several times, but only once down the S. Santiam. Nice river - with springers, summers, and sunbathers all there in June. Yeehaw! The first Ifish fishing event last Sept. was cool, but the boats spread far and wide. We made up for that at Jen and Bill's later though. In a river we can be closer at times for the antics as we fish. Sign me up. - RT

Re: An Idea?
I would definitely be interested but would need to use one of those open seats in someone's drifter. Don't think my Crestliner would work too well there. I fished the S. Santiam 4-5 times/week when I was going to college in Albany. Good river if the level's right and usually lots of fish. June's a good month, also.

Re: An Idea?
Sounds great. Let's do it, although we'll need to hi-jack a Dunkin Donuts truck for RT. I love fishin' for summers, it's a far cry from neoprenes and ice-proof clothes. I'll probably have an open seat RT if you can stand sitting next to G again.

Re: An Idea?
ok, a couple questions. How far is it from Portland to the Santium? Is there facilities to camp as in a trailer? Would this be a saturday float? My big problem is my kids and such. Is it a river that's an easy float (is it similar to the Wynoochee or the Satsop?). If it is I can float with my kids on board. Plus when I have Os make my new frame I can load up my cat with people. If it's not to long of a ride, and I can take my kids, then you can count on myself to be there. Just let me know what the final plans are. I won't be able to take a friday off (maybe possibly I can sweet talk my way into one if I have enough advance notice to give work) so I'll need a good plan well ahead of time.
Thanks...Jerry

Re: An Idea?
Wheresmybobber. Got a big beckman net that hasn't missed yet however there's alway's a chance . Your'e welcome in my boat anytime. I'll bring the shrimp, me and my girlfriend will go pump a bunch the day before so don't go wasting money on store bought shrimp. South santiam steelies love little bug's so you might want to bring some jig's in subdued color's like brown's , olive green's and black's. 1/8 OZ. will do it 1/4 OZ. will work too. P.S. How you like your steak cooked. BBQ in the boat? Hit this thread again with you're reply. MIKIE.

Re: An Idea?
WW, the Packsaddle run on the N. Santiam is a very challenging run, for driftboats especially, with lots of boulders to pull hard around and also some strong technical drops with twisting hydraulics. The toughest I rowed my driftboat thru is called "Spencer's Hole". The whole river concentrates into a relatively narrower shut and drops with twisting backcurlers. You can't run this without having your double oar power pivots down or you will turn and could broach/flip. We would put in at day break in June/July for summer steelhead and see only a couple other dirftboats running that section, and the rafts didn't show 'till later; so it was a good place to fish! I would like a re-visit someday (like so many river sections, I haven't floated it in years). ...
Jerry, the S. Santiam is relatively tame water from the dam launch all the way thru, from my recollection. A few rapids are better than the Satsop's, but that didn't even have what I call real rapids; only riffles at the low level we ran it Saturday. It would be a nice day for your family on the cat in my opinion. - Steve
Edit: 'Fly, your post hit after I clicked mine in. Amen to partying after the float!

Re: An Idea?
Kwiky,
I have fished the south for quite a few years but mostly go after summers, I have only targeted springers a few times. I was wondering if you could share some techniques with me for fishing out of my boat. I see/have done people banking for them at the Lebanon dam and at Waterloo below the falls. If you want to keep some of this to yourself I understand or you can e-mail me at home (see my profile), I would like to do more fishing for them this spring, love this river.
Thanks,
JK

Re: An Idea?
Count me in on a south fork float. I've done N. Santiam park down on the North Santiam and it can be a lil' bit hairy. I've heard the south fork is tame in comparison. Don't have a boat but might get a buddy with one to come if not anybody have a seat in theirs? I've fished the North Fork many many years and had some great days. July is kinda late for chinooks; you may want to fish early june when the nooks are in good shape. This sounds like a lotta fun and I want to meet all you ifishers up close. Might even find a summer steelie... been kinda hard to find the last few years

Re: An Idea?
I can't miss another floatilla, can I? I would like to go and Superfly, I can pick you up on the way down. That challenging section that RT described sounds like a blast!!! Just as long as I don't have to row it! I agree about partying before the float. After last weekends experience, I think that it would be a lot more fun to have a big get together/party after the float so we can all talk about the day we had and exaggerate on the fish stories. So who's going with the Kid (me)? Speak now or forever hold your peace.......Superfly, Parker, RT, 'Os, Dan S., gulp....uh, hey_yall*jk*? Anybody else? I just love floating new rivers and not knowing what's around the next bend. 'Til then

Re: An Idea?
Jerry,
The Drift we plan on doing on the south is very mellow. The kids will be fine. As for camping, There is a couple nice camp grounds on Foster Resevior and there is a KOA very close to the put in.
ARTWO,
Springer fishing on the south isnt much different than the Sand or the Clack. Backbouncing, kwikfish, jet diver and bait, bobber, and good ole fasion drift fish all produce fish. I dont target sprigers on the south anymore. I got kinda spoiled on Rogue springers. There is a couple of good springer holes from foster to pleasant valley. I can fill you in on some better drifts for springers if you want me to. E-mail and let me know.
As for what day you all want to go, A saturday or a Sunday. You guys make the call.

Re: An Idea?
Sheeiit, I tried to resist, but I'm afraid I too have taken the bait. I think I can speak for my buddy Onstep and say we'll be there. Late May/early June would be an excellent time in my opininon. With the low water we seem to be experiencing this year, the water may be unusually warm by then which could push both springers and summer steelies up early. Sounds like a hoot--keep us posted.

Re: An Idea?
Justin AKA Kid Sauk, I am with ya bro, we will go down there and establish the Washington dominance on foriegn soil!!!
Go Dawgs, I mean renegade white man and Kid sauk!!!!! we will go and stir the **** in the valley of the beavs, sounds like fun and then establish the hierarchy of the ifish partying cabinet, the way I see it , it goes like this R.T. commander and Chief,
Superfly, events cooridinator and chief of staff, Saukit2em Kid sauk, Head of Logistics and supplies. And of course, My girlfriend Pam, well lets say she will be on the diplomatic team putting out the fires we have started.

Re: An Idea?
Scales/Kwiky,
I understand how tight some of those secrets can be. I do allot of springer fishing on the Sandy and have worked hard to figure out techniques that work well for me and would only share with a select few. I was just wondering if the usual techneques that I use on the Sandy would work well on the South (ie. diver and bait, backbouncing, ect.) with maybe alittle more detail. If not, like I said I understand............I can probably get it figured out, I know allot of people that fish this river as well, just thought we could share.

Re: An Idea?
I recommend a date of earlier in June than later in June as I see a problem of low water coming.(No snow pack this year) Fishing can get very tight on the S. Fork when the water gets really low late in June.
I am really glad that RT and Super have rides because I didn't know which one to fill up my open seats with. I do understand why no one would want to ride with a local boy. Old men with headaches hate catching lots of wild and crazy Summer Steelhead and mean Spring Chinook.
The Waterloo Falls aren't really that bad. When I was a kid we tied a rope to a tree and connected it to a chunk of plywood and surfed the base of the falls. Crazy!

OhKissmy : oops "Old men with headaches hate catching lots of wild and crazy Summer Steelhead and mean Spring Chinook."
Thats why they leave the fish catching to the real "Heavy Hitters" from Oly Town,I'm sure we'll try and make it and I'm sure Fly as a reputation down there too ...Os

Re: An Idea?
Yes, Superfishy came down last Spring to fish with me a couple of times for a few minutes. His presence seems to shut off the rivers in Oregon but not Washington. He got so frustrated that he drove all the way to the Wind and....I can't repeat the numbers he claimed to catch as they were so far up there... Hell, he claimed to catch more fish that day than our little S. Fork hatchery gets all season. But since Joe is such a sportsman I never doubt any thing that he says. I can't, he might cut me off of the Vision nipple.

Re: An Idea?
Ive been down Waterloo falls in a raft. It wasnt all that bad. Well for me it wasnt bad, The guy rowing the raft didnt like it real well. He tried rowing with hs ribcage. 2 of those ribs kinda got broke. I wont do it again, Especially in a driftboat.
RT is right about doing the party float in early June. Right now the South is at summertime levels and the resivoirs are way too low. How about the first weekend in June? I guess I can miss the Jetboat races in Gold Beach. I will be Grants Passthe week before watching the races.
As for bait. Sandshrimp for the steelies. Good eegs if ya wanna chase a springer or two. Personally I dont fish for them anymore. Jigs work really good on the south, as do most other summer steelhead techniques.
How does june 2nd sound?? Or would June 9th be better?
Both days are saturdays..... Lets hear from everyone intrested.
